Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Safety Compliance Lead located at Columbus General Office, Norfolk Operations Center, York Operations Center in Columbus , Nebraska. Position closes January 29th, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

This position will report to the Corporate Safety Manager.

Position Summary

Interpret state and federal agency regulatory requirements, develop corresponding safety policies and procedures, develop hazard assessment criteria, conduct safety and ergonomic assessments, and advise management regarding administrative, process, and equipment recommendations. Perform OSHA research and clearly identifies safety requirements and expectations.

Provide the vision and leadership to guide the District to a level of compliance and achievement of company safety policies and principles. Provide expert guidance to management in the development and implementation of safety and ergonomics-related processes and programs.

Education, Training and Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferably with a major in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety Engineering, Health and Safety Engineering, or a closely related curriculum and three years of experience in occupational safety and health inspections, audits, and/or safety process management. The work experience must have included either: (1) day-to-day on-site application of professional safety process management and/or safety process engineering concepts and techniques to actual work processes in industries such as manufacturing, production, construction, or public utilities; or (2) professional experience requiring research, review and application of standards, guidelines, and specifications related to safety.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Board Certification as an Industrial-Hygienist (CIH).

OR

Certified Safety Professional.

OR

Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) is desired.

Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP) or other mid-level ergonomics certification or equivalent experience desired.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Provide leadership and support on all aspects of industry-best safety and ergonomics-related programs. Conduct regulatory research and develop and monitor criteria for determining NPPD Safety Program compliance with regulatory standards. Establish evaluation criteria for both compliance (what must be done) and process (how it should be done) audits.

Manage and update the district-wide ergonomics program. Research and interpret occupational safety and ergonomics standards, legislation, and related documents; develop corresponding policies and provide guidance to management to assist with compliance with regulatory mandates and best practices. Maintain effective auditing skills through personal learning and by evaluating audit processes and methods used by NPPD peers, other companies as well as within the industry. Develop a plan (scope, schedule, and cost) for evaluating the effectiveness of the audit process by external, objective sources.

Analyze, interpret, and document results and make appropriate recommendations to management for safety and ergonomics program improvements including improved hazard controls and guidance on tool and safety related equipment improvements.

Develop, track, and analyze safety performance measures to understand the safety performance of the business units, and implement appropriate action to foster an interdependent safety culture.

Gather safety data, analyze the data, and report the data in an understandable fashion to management, employees, and other regulatory organizations as requested. Organize and conduct safety assessments, audits, and observations of NPPD programs; provide detailed written reports and provide the required follow-up. Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities. Promote the effective use of technology for efficiency improvements.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Pay Grade - 14 Monthly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $7,746.00 - $9,876.00

Travel Required: 25% to 50% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.

Retirement Savings

NPPD employees may participate in two retirement plan options – a 401(k) plan and a 457(b) plan. Both plans allow for pre-tax or Roth contributions. After the first six months of employment, the 401(k) plan includes a generous matching contribution from NPPD. The five-year vesting period begins on an employee’s hire date. Our retired employees are eligible for retiree healthcare benefits as well as a life benefit paid out to designated beneficiaries upon their passing.
