Richmond Community Services Phlebotomist in Yonkers, New York

Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of blood specimens from the individuals served as ordered by the Physician/ Nurse Practitioner.

Essential Job Functions:

Will ensure proper identification of individual by accompanying the Nurse Manager or assigned Designee. This requires visual and auditory acuity to make direct observations and the ability to communicate verbally using the English language.
  1. Will obtain label from the lab registration form for specimens. This requires visual acuity.

  2. Prior to drawing of blood, Phlebotomist will make eye contact with the individual addresses him/her by name, and inform him/her of the treatment to be rendered. This requires visual and auditory acuity to make direct observations and the ability to communicate verbally using the English language.

  3. Will draw ordered blood specimens as ordered by the Physician/Nurse Practitioner. This requires handling and grasping or otherwise working with hands and fingers.

  4. Will centrifuge blood as necessary and instruct nurses on the proper procedure for centrifuging blood.

  5. If unable to obtain blood after two venipunctures, notifies the Nurse Manager or Assigned Designee.

  6. Responsible for accurately placing labels on specimen at time of collection. This requires visual acuity and dexterity of hands and fingers.

  7. Completes appropriate portion of the Lab Tracking Form (NUR-84) after the specimen is collected.

  8. Will adhere to all OSHA regulations pertaining to the drawing of blood, including, though not limited to the proper use of personal protective equipment and standard precautions. Attend Richmond’s annual mandatory training classes.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited Phlebotomist Certificate Program

Other:

  • Current New York State Phlebotomist Certificate

  • Must be able to communicate in writing and orally using the English language

Experience:

One to two years of experience working with developmentally disabled, preferred.

This is a Per Diem position with up to 12 hours per week.
