Overview:

There is one Probation Officer opening with the Yakima County Juvenile Court Department. This position performs all facets of duties related to the "supervision" of a caseload of juvenile criminal and/or status offenders. Caseload may include specialized populations of offenders.

Note: This is an AFSCME 87P Juvenile Master Contract Bargaining Unit position.

Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:

Interviews and assesses juvenile clients assigned to caseload; meets regularly with clients and guardians to monitors court ordered conditions, provides case management according to the Case Management Assessment Process adopted by Washington State Juvenile Court Administrators, counsels, advises, performs re-assessments, and staffs cases regularly with supervisor; engages youth to increase motivation to participate in evidence based programs, promising practices, restorative community service and other community based services designed to address risk and protective factors. Participates in the facilitation of Individual Alternative Choice Training (I-ACT) or other skill classes.

 

Coordinates activities and services with outside parties including parents, law enforcement, social service agencies, schools to provide and receive information and to clarify policies and court orders.  Receives information regarding referrals and case management and acts as an advocate for clients. Presents information and provides technical knowledge to schools and other interested parties; provides program support services such as scheduling hearings; serving notice and summons; fingerprints clients; collects urine samples for drug/alcohol use; transporting clients.

 

Documents case progress by preparing case notes, compiling statistics, preparing periodic reports, court reports.  Maintains files. Participates in unit meetings, work groups and committees.

 

Conducts field observations of client activity; visits client in the community and at home; Determines correct sanctions when client is out of compliance with supervision requirements, testifies in court, provides recommendations to the court; conducts decline and capacity investigations and prepares related reports or recommendations responds to crisis situations as needed; Represents juvenile department in courtroom.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor Degree in Sociology, Psychology criminal justice or closely related field.

Valid Washington State Driver's License and proof of insurance at time of appointment.
