Responsibilities

Job Details:

The Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for technical clerical and delivery duties for the department as well as with the preparation labeling and distribution of medication under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The technician must demonstrate competency in sterile compounding automated dispensing computer systems (MedKeeper Cerner McKesson) and ability to recognize and prioritize clerical responsibilities including medication labeling billing reports and special processes.

  • Prepares IV admixtures accurately using aseptic technique and properly labels, logs and initials final product. Measurement procedure: document accuracy on daily IV shift Quality Assurance log.

  • Fills unit dose orders timely and accurately, including extemporaneous compounding.

  • Demonstrates an awareness of patient rights, promoting patient privacy and confidentiality. Demonstrates an interest and willingness in discovering and meeting patient and customer needs.

  • Omnicell/floor stock medications are filled accurately and in a timely manner. Follows department controlled substance sign-out and restocking procedure including investigation and documentation of discrepancies.

  • Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills such as active listening, giving, seeking and accepting feedback, using appropriate line of authority, and communicates in a calm, constructive manner.

  • Seeks validation of knowledge base and skill level, especially in areas of question.

  • Protects the confidentiality of patient information in accordance with Dignity Health policy.

  • Responsible for completion of all daily activities assigned to area. Assign projects for completion to technical staff according to needs of the department. Participates in quality improvement departmental projects as appropriate for the pharmacy technician position.

  • Demonstrates consistent compliance with WMH policies on attendance, breaks and work times.

  • Demonstrates a positive, flexible attitude.

  • Participates in required WMH environment of care training and performs in accordance with hospital policy including: Fire response, Disaster plan ,Incident and hazard reporting, Infection control standards, Hazardous materials management, Electrical safety, Appropriate use of equipment, Security measures appropriate to care/service area. Assures all quality control items are in compliance with regulations and policies; temperature logs, cleaning logs, pharmacy and unit inspections.

  • Seeks validation of knowledge where appropriate.

  • Participates in and remains current in decisions and information affecting care area. Demonstrates ability to train new technicians in appropriate sterile products techniques.

  • Participates in care area/unit quality improvement activities. Assures monthly & biannual safety inspections completed and updates disaster plan as needed.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • One year pharmacy experience in acute care facility.

  • One year of acute care hospital pharmacy practice experience or a 6-week pharmacytechnician externship in an acute care facility.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal restrictions of the activities of non-licensed personnel in hospital pharmacy medical abbreviations pharmaceutical terminology and calculations generic/trade names of medications.

  • Experience in preparation of intravenous admixtures and antineoplastic/chemotherapeutic/hazardous medications.

  • Experience working in a USP 797 clean room is preferred.

Education:

  • Completion of ASHP accredited Pharmacy Technician program is preferred.

Licensure:

  • Registration with the California State Board of Pharmacy as a registered technician.

Special Skills:

  • Intravenous therapy preparation demonstrating proper aseptic technique in all areas of IV admixture and responsible for assuring appropriate compounded items are available at all times. LVP and IVPB Anti-neoplastic agents: chemotherapy total/peripheral parenteral nutrition advance training in compounding of extemporaneous products; cream ointments vaginal preparations unit dose tablets and liquids.

Training:

  • One year acute care hospital; California Accredited Pharmacy Technician Program.

Pay Range

$35.47 - $41.52 /hour
