Abbott Senior Technologist I in Witney, United Kingdom

With a track record of innovation and development, Abbott Diabetes Care designs, develops and manufactures leading-edge glucose monitoring systems, for use in both home and hospital settings. We have a Global Centre of Excellence for Medical Devices based in Witney, Oxfordshire. The site manufactures significant volumes of test strips annually and has also been instrumental in the research, development and manufacture of the next generation FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System, launched in September 2014.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technologist I to join our manufacturing and R&D facility in Witney, West Oxfordshire. Working in a small and friendly team, you will be providing technical support to Witney’s manufacturing facility.

Day-to-day, your work will be to plan and carry out projects and investigations to support manufacturing processes and yield improvements. This may involve projects relating to raw materials, manufacturing processes, new product introduction, or finished products. Taking a Senior position, you may work as the lead/key point of contact for smaller scale projects.

In this role, you will:

  • Take ownership of development trials including organisation of the trials and ensuring the analysis and interpretation of appropriate measures, i.e. in process and release test data, to allow the identification of events that could cause substandard product.

  • Provide technical support to manufacturing in aspects relating to material changes. Identifies potential areas of inefficiency to drive continuous process, and product, cost and quality improvements in Operations.

  • Participates in and, if appropriate, lead cross functional teams to help achieve the objectives in a timely manner.

  • Ensure that all work is carried out in compliance with the company's processes and procedures. In particular that any analysis, investigative and characterization work is documented appropriately and on market changes are conducted through appropriate design control.

  • Complete analysis using laboratory equipment to aid cross functional investigations.

You’ll need to enjoy interpreting data and writing reports, as a lot of your work will involve analysing results and making recommendations on material, machinery or process improvements.

You will also be given additional responsibility for continuous improvement projects and will be required to provide technical expertise to colleagues in engineering, production and quality. This will include writing technical reports and process documentation.

To be successful, you should ideally have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a scientific or engineering discipline, or the equivalent experience. Those with a strong secondary level education and a passion for science are also encouraged to apply. Your academic unpinning will be supported by industry experience in the space of development trials and investigations. You must also have excellent attention to detail skills, a logical and methodical approach to problem solving, the ability to prioritise and the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances or new demands. A lot of your work will involve cross-functional teams, so you’ll also need the communication and inter-personal skills to be able to build relationships with colleagues in various departments across the business.

You will be expected to spend time in the manufacturing facility, so will need to have, or be able to develop, good hands-on practical skills. Good IT skills including Excel and PowerPoint are also required for this role. Power BI a distinct advantage.
