Senior Principal Project Engineer - IPT Lead, LEO (Onsite)

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.

Collins is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. ISR & Space Systems is a business unit within Collins and our products reside in deep space, low earth orbit, undersea and on the ground. We are also a major supplier to international space programs. The ISR & Space Systems business has contributed to significant advances in ground, air, space, and imaging technology for over 85 years. Within ISR & Space Systems we design and manufacture Environmental Control and Life Support Systems on the International Space Station, including the space suit, and undersea in submarines.

We are looking for a Project Engineer to lead team efforts for the development, testing, and production of space flight hardware and managing engineering associates.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Primary customer interface from engineering.

  • Setting team meeting agendas, leading team meetings, and driving team accountability to meet commitments including assignment and tracking of action item closures.

  • Maintain Team scope control, including status and corrective action plans to meet program budget.

  • Experience with firm fixed price, cost plus, and Earned Value Processes.

  • Perform as Control Account Manager (CAM).

  • Drive engineering change activities and meet department EC Metrics

  • Review ongoing relative proposals.

  • Coordination and driving failure investigation activities including Fault Tree Development and Root Cause / Corrective Actions.

  • Issue resolution closures to address assembly, test, and procurement challenges.

  • Leads the Engineering team as the IPT representative to meet all system requirements during the proposal, system definition, design, verification, manufacturing, and sustainment phases.

  • Drive Risk and Opportunities within the efforts through the Value Stream Leader

  • Develops plans/schedules necessary to meet critical programmatic and customer milestones (hardware deliveries, qualification activities, customer lab/flight test A/C support activities).

  • Conducts Project Execution – Cost/Schedule/Performance, EVMS, Change Management, Work Scope Control, risk management, and Mitigation, and Standard Work management.

  • Creates and monitors key metrics (quality, cost, schedule…) and implements appropriate corrective actions to address negative trends.

  • Pursues all recurring and non-recurring cost-saving opportunities to maximize project profitability.

  • Performs critical path analysis and prepares and implements work-around plans to ensure the successful completion of projects.

  • Leads team meetings to manage projects effectively and communicates written/oral plans and status to all levels of management and to the customer.

  • Represents Collins as the customer's primary engineering contact. Leads efforts to investigate field performance issues, drive RCCA’s, and manage action items.

  • Supports ongoing Operations and Quality, Supply Chain—driving RCCA investigations, Cost-reduction initiatives, and Zero-defect plans.

  • Maintains a focus on Customer Satisfaction, On-time Delivery, and Quality.

  • Supports sustainment and service/repair contracts and operations, diminishing manufacturing sources, obsolete product re-introduction, and cold-start initiatives.

The candidate will drive the execution of all engineering responsibilities on the program while meeting both internal and external customer expectations. Direct communication with customers will be required – including daily tag-ups, weekly meetings, and quarterly meetings. This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), technical experience, and the ability to work as cross-functional team member.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Mechanical or other Engineering degree w/ 10 + years of experience

  • MA/MS in Engineering and/or MBA degree w/ 10 + years of experience

  • Prior experience in project engineering and managing integrated product teams.

  • Hardware experience relative to design and test of electromechanical and thermal control hardware

  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize both daily issues and strategize longer term projects.

  • Superior interpersonal and influencing skills, including coaching, and mentoring of other engineering staff.

  • Strong computer skills, MS Office

  • Natural presence/comfortable presenting to internal and external customers

  • Ability to bring team members together and work problems to resolution.

  • The determination to lead with the purpose of improving Integrated Product Team performance.

The salary range for this role is 118,000 USD - 246,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
