The candidate for this intern position will work closely with an experienced Collins Design Engineer supporting design and development of conventional and additively manufactured heat exchanger for aerospace applications. The successful candidate will use fundamentals of design and structural analysis including Mechanics, Strength of Materials & Material Properties to design components that meet internal and external customers’ requirements. The intern design engineer will assist in calculating stresses via finite element analysis and/or hand calculations to support structural analysis of hardware.

What You Will Do:

  • Gain knowledge in research, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems in areas including, but not limited to, mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, or heat transfer for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.

  • Participate in product development activities, executes tests, and produces parts, designs, or sketches, following all appropriate Mechanical Engineering design, safety, and qualification standards.

  • Participate in product development activities including cost estimates, implementation of standard specifications, drawing board layout, and development of performance or maintenance requirements. Execute tests for systems, sub-systems, and components.

    What You Will Learn:

  • Learn about applied research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

  • Learn test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess operating condition effects. Produce parts, designs, or sketches for machines, components, systems or work orders / purchase requests

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or other applicable discipline

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or granted refugee or asylee status) as defined here: https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-22/chapter-I/subchapter-M/part-120/subpart-C/section-120.62

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • A minimum of 2 years college / university studies completed in pursuit of an Engineering degree

  • Experience in 2D and 3D CAD tools including, UG NX, CATIA or equivalent

  • Use of finite element modeling tools such as Abaqus, Ansys, Nastran or equivalent

  • Experience in Python, Unix, Matlab, VB, FORTRAN or other programming languages is a plus

  • Ability to read and understand manufacturing definition and tolerances.

  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication, brazing, and welding techniques

  • Demonstrated success working independently and within a team environment and is self-motivated

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Be proficient with MS Office applications, especially MS Word and MS Excel

    Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products. Must be a commutable distance to Windsor Locks, CT to work an onsite schedule. This position may be eligible for relocation.

The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD - 82,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
