The Resource Nurse must remain flexible and maintain a focus toward the future. The scope of responsibility and accountability for the Resource Nurse continuously evolves to meet the demands of the practice and regulatory environment. The Resource Nurse utilizes best practice to provide and direct clinical support to the multi-disciplinary care team. Demonstrates empathy and respect and collaborates to achieve expected outcomes. Meets the highest level of professionalism consistent with a Magnet hospital. This licensed professional position will have an impact on quality improvement and initiatives, safety practices, patient satisfaction, and physician alignment by supporting nurses and clinical practice.

Job Description:

JOB FUNCTIONS

The Resource Nurse Responsibilities:

● Serves as an expert clinical resource to staff members in all areas within Winchester Hospital.

● The resource nurse assumes a variety of roles including: clinical/technical competence, consultant, communicator, collaborator/advisor/mentor, and educator/facilitator.

● Establishes a routine structure which ensures our quality and patient safety strategies are safely hardwired for the off-shift staff, this includes routine meetings with ACNO of Quality and Patient Safety and/or designee to review quality improvement initiatives needed in response to trends identified through the incident reporting system.

● Duties shall include continuous rounding throughout the hospital and collaborating with manager or supervisor during the shift.

● Provides clinical, material, and patient care resources on assigned shift.

● Acting as a clinical mentor and operational resource, supporting staff as they navigate the needs on the off-shift.

● Collaborates effectively with others to achieve positive clinical and operational outcomes as well as improvement in colleague engagement. Supports team concept and readily adapts to changes as needed.

● Serves as positive role model to team members and peers.

● Responds to codes, rapid response calls, emergency patient transport needs, and assists with IV access, medication administration, documentation, and other duties under the direction of the nursing supervisor on assigned shift. Identification of learning opportunities related to these tasks for the enhanced development of staff.

● Assists new clinical staff in performing functions and ensuring alignment and standards with Winchester Hospital policies and procedures.

● Recognize gaps in practice in relation to specific departments and/or nursing levels such as new graduate, traveler, or regular staff RNs, including providing assistance to staff when additional resources are required

● Communicates and incorporates the Culture of Safety tools and preventable harm event concepts into daily practice.

● Adhere to quality and safety guidelines by ensuring the completion of incident reports as appropriate by all staff. .

● Participates in unit-based education, performance initiatives and efforts to continually align with the hospital and system strategic plans.

● Fosters an environment of best practices, using clinical expertise to improve patient outcomes and nursing competencies.

● Provide consultation at the bedside in all areas in order to optimize patient outcomes.

● Demonstrates and fosters a commitment to hospital, performance improvement initiatives, goals and directives. Supports department leaders in efforts to implement change and improve patient outcomes. Adheres to quality and safety guidelines and communicates performance and safety concerns through the appropriate chain of command.

● Role models the Magnet standards of professional development and clinical practice.

● Actively participates in efforts to achieve Magnet Redesignation.

● Supports evidenced based practices resulting in an outstanding patient experience for both patients and their families. This includes the rounding process, effective handoff between shifts in the department, hospital and during the transfer process to other facilities.

● Identify supply/equipment issues in a timely manner and communicate appropriately in order to ensure availability of necessary items.

● Functions effectively in patient crisis situations and utilizes emergency resources.

● Fulfills all required documentation accurately, legibly and timely.

● Communicate effectively with the healthcare team utilizing handoff and other communication procedures. Role model the ability to give and accept respectful feedback to enhance teamwork and improve patient outcomes.

● Appropriately follows the chain of command and adheres to hospital policies and procedures.

● Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance patient satisfaction and a culture of safety.

● Assumes other roles as needed based on the needs of the hospital.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS

This position is responsible to meet all applicable competencies for functions they perform and/or train others on.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required: Bachelor's degree in Nursing,

Preferred: Master’s Degree

Experience: Preferred: Previous experience in critical care nursing

Other Skills/Knowledge:

Required: Computer skills, data management skills, ability to lead projects to achieve desired outcomes, strong interpersonal and collaboration skills

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:

Required: Massachusetts Registered Nurse License

LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

Basic Life support

Advanced Cardiac Life Support within 6 months

PALS within 6 months

POPULATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Infant, children, adolescent (age 13 to 18), adult and geriatric.

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Professional Commitment Requirements: Keep abreast of developments in the field and/or licensure through continuing education, participation in professional organizations or a combination of both.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

● Reports to Nurse Manager of the Float Pool

● No direct reports however provides ongoing performance feedback to department leaders.

● Coordinates and Educates teams at the direction of the Nurse Manager. May guide the work of others as a proxy for the Nurse Manager during the off shift. Establishes communication mechanisms to ensure the Manager is informed of progress on performance.
