Brief Summary of Work f r this Position
The primary purpose of the Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Technician is to test and maintain the University's fire, sprinkler, security and other systems as required. Responsibilities include:
- Maintain fire alarm equipment
- Maintain fire protection sprinkler system equipment
- Maintain circuit boards
- Maintain power supplies and other life safety systems
- Review design and construction or modification of electronic devices
Operate standard or specialized testing equipment while troubleshooting electronic devices and systems to include:
- fire pumps
- dry/pre-action fire protection sprinkler systems
- wet chemical kitchen hoods
- dry chemical elevator compression systems
- sprinkler system water flow inspections - exercising control valves
- battery load testing on fire alarm and burglar systems
- annual fire alarm inspections
- annual area of rescue inspections
May be assigned to a specific system or multiple systems
- Replace and modify existing systems
- Review plans and specifications for new or existing buildings to be renovated
- Knowledge of electronic principles, mathematical principles and fundamental physics as applied to electronics
**This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the university and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions, even though the university may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow, ice and/or debris removal under the direction of a supervisor.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associate's degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
2+ years performing moderate to advanced level tasks associated with fire, security systems and/or other electronic/electric systems
Moderate to advanced level knowledge of microprocessor based fire and security systems and practices for repair and installation of these systems
Ability to design, install and repair
Ability to plan work operations, follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with department heads and other trade and contract workers are required
Ability to use computers, IPads, IPhone, for timekeeping, communication, data entry and work order management
Ability to maintain accurate records
Ability to perform routine fire sprinkler maintenance duties as listed under the North Carolina Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician license to include such duties include testing of water flow and tamper switches on wet and dry sprinkler systems and the testing of fire pumps
Moderate to advanced level knowledge of microprocessor based fire and security systems and electronic clock systems and practices for repair and installation of these systems
Knowledge of NFPA 25/NF
