Summary Statement - The Department of Labor (DOL) Communications Coordinator is the department spokesperson responsible for communicating agency messages to internal and external customers and educating and raising public awareness of services as well as processes and operations. The incumbent will supervise promotion of DOL programs and initiatives and manage department accomplishments through the media, public officials and communities, and any other means of communication.

Preferred Qualification - Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.

  • Two years\' experience in Governmental, non-profit or corporate communications.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates Department Regulatory efforts, ensuring that public meeting notices are distributed in a timely manner, testimony transcribed and relevant stakeholders are notified of need to be present.
  • Responsible for Interdivisional cooperative efforts which includes developing department policy, committee formation and management, and special projects as assigned.
  • Tracks and monitors external contacts, gathers information and prepares annual report for the department.
  • Manages budget and contract for marketing/outreach efforts.
  • Receives and manages all incoming calls from the media.
  • Gathers and provides appropriate information within the Department upon receipt of media requests.
  • Refers reporters to subject matter experts as needed or assists in finding other sources to gather information not available within the Department.
  • Corrects media errors quickly.
  • Maintains updated media list with contact information for reporters.
  • Proactively works with media to place stories on important issues related to the Department.
  • Writes and distributes press releases as needed/warranted by the DOL and conducts appropriate follow up with media outlets.
  • Monitors media outlets for news affecting or potentially affecting the DOL, other Departments or Governors Communication staff.
  • Reviews and approves all Department Advertising. Oversees and develops events planned within the Department.
  • Maintains knowledge of Delaware and federal FOIA requirements.
  • Reviews, edits and approves all Department documents intended for consumption by the public.
