Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Upper School Social Studies Teacher to join our educational team. The Upper School Social Studies Teacher will play a crucial role in cultivating students\' understanding of human societies, cultures, and systems, as well as their ability to think critically about the social, political, and economic forces shaping the world. The ideal candidate will inspire a passion for social studies, foster critical thinking skills, and create an inclusive and engaging learning environment that prepares students to be informed and active global citizens.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and engaging social studies curriculum for upper school students, encompassing a variety of disciplines such as history, geography, civics, economics, and sociology.
  • Design and deliver thought-provoking lessons that encourage students to analyze historical events, geographical phenomena, cultural practices, and societal issues from multiple perspectives.
  • Integrate primary and secondary sources, including texts, documents, maps, artifacts, and multimedia resources, to deepen students\' understanding of social studies concepts and develop their research and analytical skills.
  • Facilitate discussions and debates on complex social issues, encouraging students to articulate their viewpoints, engage in respectful dialogue, and consider diverse perspectives.
  • Guide students in developing their writing skills through analytical essays, research projects, and presentations that demonstrate their understanding of social studies content and their ability to construct evidence-based arguments.
  • Utilize technology and digital resources to enhance instruction, facilitate collaborative learning experiences, and promote digital literacy skills in social studies research and communication.
  • Assess student learning through a variety of formative and summative assessments, providing timely and constructive feedback to support student growth and development.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to participate actively in their social studies education.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to integrate interdisciplinary connections and promote a holistic understanding of social studies within the school community.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, academic expectations, and opportunities for involvement in their child\'s social studies education.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor\'s degree in Social Studies, History, Education, or related field (Required).
  • Teaching certification/license in Social Studies or related subject area (Preferred).
  • Prior experience teaching social studies at the upper school level preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of social studies content areas, including history, geography, civics, economics, and sociology.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students in the study of social studies.
  • Creativity and innovation in lesson planning and instructional delivery.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive classroom community.
  • Proficiency in educational technology tools and resources.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth and development.
