Grace and MercyHome Care Services, LLC(Caring Is Our Pride!)SPEECH THERAPIST JOB DESCRIPTION REPORTS TO: Director of Patient ServicesDEPARTMENT: Therapy TIME / STATUS: Regular, Fulltime, Per Diem, Non-exempt BENEFITS: Based on Schedule GENERAL DESCRIPTION:Speech therapists, also known as speech and language therapists or speech-language pathologists, are highly trained health care professionals who will treat patients with speech and language disorders. These disorders can range from a total inability to produce speech sounds or articulate them clearly, to stuttering and accent problems, to cognitive communication impairments, to loss of communication due to impaired hearing or hearing loss. RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Speech therapists assess, diagnose, and treat language, voice, and fluency problems. 2. Work with people who have swallowing difficulties. 3. The goal of the speech therapist is to alleviate speech and language difficulties, enabling patients to communicate in a more effective and satisfying manner. 4. Writing up a plan specific to the patient in question.5. Plan, organize, and conduct speech therapy to patients to help rehabilitate those impaired because of illness, injury, or psychological or developmental problems.6. Consult with the rehabilitation team to select activity programs and coordinate speech therapy with other therapeutic activities.7. Test and evaluate patients' speech and mental abilities and analyze medical data to determine realistic rehabilitation goals for them8. Select activities that will help patients learn work and life-management skills within limits of their mental and physical capabilities.9. Plan and implement programs and social activities to help patients learn work and school skills and adjust to handicaps.10. Recommend changes in patients' work or living environments consistent with their needs and capabilities.11. Help patients improve decision-making, abstract reasoning, memory, sequencing, coordination, and perceptual skills using computer programs.12. Lay out materials such as puzzles, scissors, and eating utensils for use in therapy and clean and repair these tools after therapy sessions.13. Provide orientation and supervision in speech therapy techniques and objectives for Home Health Aides (HHAs) to assist patients when needed.14. Recommend special supplies and equipment, such as flash cards and computer-aided adaptive equipment.12. Evaluate patients' progress and prepare reports that detail progress. Complete and maintain necessary records.13. Provide patients with assistance in locating and holding jobs.14. Assist Director of Patient Services to formulate agency policies and procedures for speech therapy.15. Participate in departmental and general meetings as neededQualifications1.Must have obtained at least a Master’s degree in speech-language pathology and/or audiology.2.Must be currently licensed and registered as a Speech Language Pathologist in New York State. 3.Fluency in a language other than English, particularly Spanish, will be a plus.4.At least one year experience in Home Care.Speech Therapist Job Responsibilities and Desired SkillsSpeech and language difficulties can have many different causes. Some, such as brain injury, cerebral palsy, cleft palate, organic hearing impairment or those that result from a stroke, are physical in nature. Others, such as retardation, are developmental. Some are acquired, and can have an emotional component. Still others, such as difficulty swallowing, can have an age-related component. Speech therapists use a variety of tests, both written and oral, as well as specially developed instrumentation to diagnose the nature and extent of an observed impairment. Based on this data, they develop and administer a course of treatment specific to each individual's needs. They track progress, provide clinical services, and counsel patients and families, often working in collaboration with other health care and education professionals, including teachers, interpreters, doctors, social workers, and psychologists. Speech therapists may work in a wide range of settings, including schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing facilities, clinics, geriatric facilities, home health care services, or public health departments. The successful speech therapist will possess both excellent communication skills and exceptional interpersonal skills. The therapist must be observant, in order to assess patients, and flexible in developing unique treatment regimens for each patient. As patient progress is often slow, patience is a plus, as are compassion and a sincere desire to help.
