Position Summary
The Corps Ministry Assistant responsibilities are to provide assistance and support to all activities of the Whittier Corps and, as directed provide spiritual leadership with an emphasis on outreach, youth activities and worship ministry services of the Corps.
Essential Functions
The Corps Ministry Assistant of The Salvation Army is a position of sacred trust – representing, nurturing, protecting and advancing the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army. The needs of the people in our community will be served with dignity, respect and equality. Conduct on and off the job must sustain a positive impact on The Salvation Army’s mission, programs, and public image.
The CMA will support existing programs of the Whittier Corps including Family Night, Kids Club, Jr. Church. In addition, future programs will be developed with the support of the CMA which could include Teen Group, Summer Camp, Music Classes, Encore, Bible Bowl, Corps Cadets and Sunday Worship leadership.
The Salvation Army Whittier has opportunity to connect with residents of TLC/West Wing, The Navigation Center and Silver Crest in our community. The CMA will actively participate in engagement with the residents.
Social Service clients continue to increase at The Salvation Army Whittier. The CMA will develop programs to bridge social services to The Corps and programs.
The Corps Ministries Assistant will support The Salvation Army Whittier Corps at Divisional and Territorial Events as needed and directed.
Assist in pastoral care including but not limited to: Pastoring soldiers, Friends, and interested community members, Visiting Corps and Community members, (including shut-ins).
Disciple existing members.
Promote camps to locate and register candidates for camp opportunities including summer camp, SAY Rally’s. Assist in transportation as needed.
Assist in fundraising activities including kettle kick off, annual meeting or others as determined.
Supervise assigned staff/volunteers, oversee processing of employee matters and documentation through Human Resources, including hiring seasonal and temporary employees as directed.
Assist in seasonal operations such as Kettles, Toy Drives, Food Drives, and Angel Tree, including Christmas sign ups, VBS, and other holidays or special events, as directed and as needed.
Assist the Officers with Community Care Ministry (CCM) contacting nursing homes including Silvercrest for visitation and programming opportunities.
Assist with logistics in planning special corps outreach events including set up, advertising, operations, programming and clean-up.
Work with Corps Officer and Assistant Corps Officer to increase presence of the Whittier Corps and increase participation of community residence to attend programs and Sunday Services and community businesses and organizations to increase donations required to meet the needs of the community.
Provide active support of and participating in all Salvation Army campaigns and initiatives.
Must communicate in an appropriate, professional, responsive, and supportive manner to leadership, team members, corps members, clients and community members.
Participate in community meetings as requested.
Other functions include:
Assist in conducting and/or taking records of Advisory Board and Corps Council Meetings.
Driving for programs including Sunday, Service, Women’s Ministries, VBS, Day Camp, Troops, Summer Camp, picking up donations or toys, driving seasonal workers, corps members and assisting in seasonal operations, and picking up materials or food for the corps, as needed and as directed.
Assist in business matters affecting and relating directly to assigned corps, maintaining fiscal integrity of the assigned corps (including complete and proper record keeping and security), and ensuring high standards of stewardship for funds, property and resources.
Maintain proper records, (including statistical, financial, and all others required).
Assist in completion of monthly stats and other records as required by leadership.
Maintain good public relations, function in harmony with The Salvation Army guidelines, promote, direct and support special events and activities for assigned Corps.
Must have computer knowledge including typing, Excel, and Word with preferable skills in Canva, PowerPoint, Media Shout and social media.
Data Entry including but not limited to Gift-in-Kind, Stats, Corps Management, and Kettle Web.
Answering the telephone, making phone calls, answering the door when available to do so, and interacting with clients needing services. Good communication skills a must.
Assist in social services programs such as food distribution, homeless services, social services programs as needed.
Must be in good physical and mental health, capable of meeting program demands.
Must have and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
Must successfully complete The Salvation Army’s driver safety program before driving and will be required to recertify annually as required.
Must complete required training to include but not limited to: Protecting the Mission, Sexual Harassment and others as determined.
Position is not a 9:00-5:00 position. Flexible hours to meet program and worship meetings required.
Working Conditions
Ability to walk, stand, bend squat climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift up to 40lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as file cabinet drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, and telephone.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Additional Education helpful.
Basic computer knowledge and typing skills, including Word, Publisher, and Excel. (No minimum wpm required)
Ability to read, write and communicate well in English. Bilingual in English/Spanish is preferred.
Ability to use multi-line network telephone system.
Ministry experience preferred.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Must be committed to The Salvation Army’s Christian Mission and Ministry.
Detail oriented, self-motivated and team player with excellent communication skills.
Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.
Must have a willingness and flexibility to learn and do new tasks, including but not limited to EDS and Canteen service.
Must have knowledge of cooking and preparing meals, and a willingness to prepare meals for large numbers of people.
A desire to be kind, sharing the love of God to help others grown with Him.
