Electrical Engineer - Test Equipment Design

We are looking for an enthusiastic electrical engineer to join our test engineering team. Working as an integral part of this highly collaborative team, you will develop and maintain creative test solutions for complex aerospace electromechanical actuation products, working as a technical resource for internally designed equipment, as well as writing specifications to support third party design and fabrication of test equipment. In this role, you will work closely with both product design and facility operations.as you develop the specifications, designs, and documentation for test systems, troubleshoot and repair equipment, and write procedures and test reports.

In this role, you would typically:

  • Design test consoles, control boxes, fixtures, cables, and equipment for testing electro mechanical actuators, motors, and electrical control boxes.
  • Develop and update test documentation: validation plans, electrical schematics and drawings, software documentation, bill of materials (BOMS), calibration and operating procedures.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules.
  • Write test equipment specifications to guide outside design and fabrication of test systems. Manage test equipment suppliers and ensure documentation is accurate. Write equipment validation plans and reports.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate production test equipment used for testing actuators, motors, controllers, and circuit cards.
  • Collaborate with Test Technicians to perform hardware and software validation testing.
  • Create automated test scripts and software.

We require:

  • Bachelors' degree from an accredited university in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or equivalent
  • 2 years' engineering experience
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Authorization to work in the United States

Eligibility Requirements:

This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. Whippany Actuation Systems will require proof of status before employment.

We would really like to see:

  • Experience interfacing with, configuring, and automating test equipment: sensors (load cells, encoders, LVDTs), instrumentation (signal conditioners, multiplexers, 10 cards), bench equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, function generators, DMMs, etc.).
  • Excellent understanding of engineering fundamentals and using standard lab equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, DMM's, etc.)
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability: able to troubleshoot electrical or hydraulic equipment down to component level.
  • Strong technical writing skills and ability to generate reports. Thorough and accurate with high attention to detail.
  • Time management: able to meet deadlines and make progress with multiple active projects.
  • Self-starter who demonstrates a can-do attitude.
  • Able to quickly integrate with a team and be accountable for your role.
  • Experience with schematic capture and board layout tools (Eagle, OrCAD, or PADS).
  • Experience with serial and network communication.
  • Experience with SQL and Python.
  • Ability to crimp and solder connectors, assemble cables, and calibrate test systems.
  • Experience with motors, drives, or hydraulic systems.
  • Experience with JTAG boundary scan and ICT test fixtures.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Requires repetitive movement.
  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Requires wearing common protective equipment.
  • Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Ability to work safely near multiple high energy sources: electrical to 300 VDC/480 VAC, hydraulic to 3000 psi, mechanical to 60,000 lbf.
