The Central Sterile/Sterile Processing Department is responsible for cleaning and maintaining surgical tools and equipment. This team ensures that sterilized tools are organized into trays containing the instruments required for surgery and checks equipment to make sure it is in good repair and up to date.

A caregiver in this position works 7:00AM - 3:30PM. Some flexibility needed to be available to attend meetings, support department operations, etc.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Manage the operations of and caregivers in the CPD department.

  • Serve as an expert on sterilization systems.

  • Develop annual departmental strategic and operational plans with the director.

  • Prepare annual budgets.

  • Manage staffing requirements and cost-effective programs.

  • Supervise the team that processes and distributes sterile equipment and supplies to clinical areas.

  • Develop, review and maintain all quality processes, safety programs, customer service programs and sterile monitoring programs for the department.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accrediting agencies.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Certification in Sterile Processing by the NICHSPDS, CBSPD or IAHCSMM/HSPA.

  • Three years of managerial experience in a processing service that supports surgical service, general patient care service, outpatient activity or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, supplies, equipment, sterilizers and sterilization.

  • In-depth knowledge of infection control principles, aseptic practice, sterilization, disinfection and distribution practices.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor's degree in science (nursing, biology, etc.).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform duties while standing, sitting, stooping, and reaching for long periods of time; ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a continual basis; ability to push, pull, and navigate carts weighing up to 200 pounds and manual dexterity sufficient to perform the basic functions of the job; exposure to environments of bacterial and viral contamination, and possible exposure to sterilization gases.
