Position Details:

 

Summary of Duties:

 

This position will support the execution of field and lab research projects in the environmental tree fruit physiology and management laboratory in Wenatchee, WA. This will include equipment development and maintenance, development of lab and field protocols, supervising temporary staff, as well as supporting graduate students and postdocs in experimental set up, data collection, and maintenance.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

60% | Lab Research and Analysis

 

• Conduct experiments in the laboratory per the protocols provided.

 

• Set up, operate necessary equipment and instrumentation.

 

• Work with research scientists, technologists, and graduate students for the successful completion of experiments.

 

• Prepare the materials needed for the experiments. This will include, weighing

 

• ingredients, mix ingredients as per the protocols and prepare trial batches.

 

• Calibrate the analytical equipment as per the protocols. Ensure that they are ready for the trials.

 

• Conduct the experiments and record all the necessary experimental conditions.

 

• Collect samples, label appropriately and store them properly.

 

• Conduct analytical tests on the collected samples, based on the protocols provided by the Scientists.

 

15% | Communicate Results

 

• Input the data collected into excel spreadsheets.

 

• Assist in development of manuscripts explaining the design and development of research.

 

• Document all the tests conducted in detail.

 

• Communicate the results to the supervisors both in writing and verbally.

 

15% | Field and lab inventory and lead staff

 

• Participate in college and university committees; evaluate research proposals and grants.

 

• Lead temporary staff.

 

10% | Other Duties

 

• Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

• Work is performed in lab, field and office setting.

 

• Off-site is required.

 

• Ability to navigate uneven surfaces (i.e., yards, unpaved walkways or driveways) and access various types of buildings (i.e., stairs or narrow corridors).

 

• Speech, visual, and hearing abilities that are sufficient to read and view written materials and effectively communicate and interact with WSU staff and the public---both in person and over the telephone.

 

Work Conditions:

 

• Most of the work is performed in a lab or field environment. Field work may be required across all four seasons and under hot or cold conditions.

 

• Intense emotional situations may exist which necessitate incumbent's ability to lend a calming influence and control.

 

• Occasional weekends and evening work may be required.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

• A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively
