Intermountain Health Medical Assistant Apprentice in West Valley City, Utah

Job Description:

A Medical Assistant Apprentice is responsible for learning the Medical Assistant trade at Intermountain Healthcare while attending a Medical Assistant Program.

This is a full-time employment position which pays $17.60 an hour and will start on November 11th, 2024. Please only apply if you can accept this pay rate once selected for the position. Working hours are 36 to 40 per week which may include evening and weekend shifts.

The Medical Assistant Apprentice program is about a year in length and will help you become a Certified Medical Assistant. We will ask for an additional year of work commitment after completing the program .

Classroom training for this position will be located at the Intermountain Health Lake Park si t e: 4646 Lake Park Blvd, West Valley City, UT 84120. Classroom hours are Monday – Thursday 8: 3 0 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 8: 3 0 a.m. to noon on Fridays .

Clinical rotations will be located in the Salt Lake area clinics. During your 1,200 clinical hours, you will be partnered with a Medical Assistant Clinica l Coach in each clinic where you will be assigned. You will work the schedule of the preceptor in each clinic which can be anywhere from 36 to 40 hours a week depending on the clinic which may include evening or weekend shifts.

Intermountain Health caregivers must be in good performance standing and been in your current position at least 6 months upon acceptance to the apprenticeship program .

The Medical Assistant Apprentice is responsible for always having clear lines of communication with their supervising team at IMH. The MA apprentice will observe patient-oriented procedures under the direction and supervision of Tier II or Tier III Medical Assistant, Practice Manager, clinician, RN, or LVN throughout the different divisions at Intermountain Healthcare. The MA apprentice will have the opportunity to practice with direct supervision the patient-oriented procedures and will have the opportunity to review with the mentor all areas of skills assessment improvement opportunities. It is anticipated as an Apprentice there may be challenges with implementation of skills learned in the Medical Assistant Program, the Apprentice is expected to provide feedback to their Mentor on areas they may be struggling with so the mentor can work with the Apprentice to provide additional coaching or scenarios that allow for practice of skills. As a medical assistant apprentice, they will be responsible for a wide variety of clinical and administrative tasks under the direction and guidance of experienced professionals. This allows you to hone your skills under ‘safety net’ conditions so you will be fully prepared to enter the workforce as a competent, skilled professional.

The MA apprentice will be expected to be engaged on any guidance given and to follow the Code of Conduct. The guiding principles and values at IMH will be expected to be always followed.

  • Possesses aptitude for the Medical Assistant trade

  • Essential read-only use and navigation of the electronic medical records.

  • Responsible for quality and continuous improvement within the job scope throughout all rotations.

  • Consistently exhibits behavior and communication skills that demonstrate IMH’s commitment to superior customer service, including quality, care, and concern with internal and external customers.

  • Observes vital signs and other pertinent patient information while shadowing their mentor.

  • Responsible for all actions/responsibilities as described in company-controlled documentation for this position.

  • Contributes to and supports the corporation's quality initiatives by adopting and communicating the corporation's quality improvement efforts.

  • Uses, protects, and discloses HCP patients’ protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.

  • Observes/view various procedures such as ear lavage, ECG, spirometry, injections, peak flows, pulse oximetry, breathing treatments, suture removals, wound dressings, vision/hearing tests, urine pregnancy tests, urine dips, blood glucose testing, and blood hemoglobin (hemocue) testing.

  • Assists clinicians with procedures that vary in levels of complexity

  • Shadows mentee on patient on lab, radiology, and other procedure/testing preparations.

  • Observes in visit closure with patient and clinician for next steps for lab, x-ray, referrals, DME, etc.

  • Inquires and is open-minded to learning the Medical Assistant trade throughout the organization

  • Observes the handling and delivery of patient service recovery methods

  • Participates regularly in skills aptitude training and evaluations. Participates regularly in site staff and department meetings, huddles, etc…

  • Maintains and cleans exam/treatment areas, specimen processing areas, and medical equipment with the support of the mentee

  • Stocks exam rooms, treatment/procedure rooms, specimen processing areas, and nursing stations with the support of the mentee

  • Participates in Quality Improvement projects

  • Escalate potential emergency situations to the appropriate level.

EDUCATION

Minimum Requirement:

Selected for our 90-day Medical Assistant program.

Required:  High School Diploma or GED required

Successful completion of a 90-day class instruction to move to clinical portion of training program.
