Registered Nurse- Medical Surgical Unit (MSU)

Work Location: Keller Army Community Hospital, West Point, NY

Eagle Health is seeking a highly qualified professional to join our team in support of a government customer.

Work Hours: Sunday to Saturday - 12-hour shifts run 0645-1845 and 1845-0645. Additional hours may be added or reduced as required by patient demand

Core Duties:

  • Coordinate patient care in collaboration with a wide array of healthcare professionals
  • Facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality, and cost effectiveness
  • Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all DHA and MTF established policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Perform physical exam and health histories
  • Provide health promotions, counseling, and education
  • Administer medications, wound care, and numerous other personalized nursing-based interventions
  • Direct and supervise care provided by other healthcare professionals
  • Accountable for making patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel
  • Complete all administrative daily assignments/duties as outlined by department leadership
  • Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations
  • Communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization
  • Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate
  • Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes
  • Documentation processing and attending to patient care comply with The Joint Commission (TJC) guidelines
  • Review, understand, and comply with established medical record procedures, regulations, and principles to carry out a variety of medical record functions such as compiling data, analysis, coding, and quality assurance
  • Comply with DHA and local hospital policies for maintaining a file system and updating records, which requires keeping weekly lists of all records and retiring records annually
  • Comply with DHA and MTF documentation requirements and policies regarding the release of information to outside agencies; prepare correspondence and summaries to a variety of requestors, such as the Veterans Administration Hospitals, Social Security Administration, and Insurance Companies. Employee must abide by the Privacy Act to determine what types of patient information can be released
  • Comply with DHA and MTF policy for return of records to the appropriate location
  • Electronic Health Record System- Mandatory use of medical database for keeping records, ordering of ancillary procedures, ordering of medications, writing doctor's orders, schedule follow-up visits and performing other required patient functions
  • Participate in quality nursing measures such as chart reviews, peer feedback, peer reviews, and suggestions to the Unit Practice Counsel representative
  • Comply with the standards of the Joint Commission, applicable provisions of law, and the rules and regulations of any and all governmental authorities pertaining to licensure and regulation of healthcare personnel and medical treatment facilities, the regulations and standards of medical practice of the MTF and the bylaws of the MTF's medical staff. Adhere to and comply with all DHA and local instructions and notices that may be in effect during the term of the contract

Specific Duties:

  • Perform duties in the specialties of Medical Surgical (Med-Surg) as prescribed by the regulation and/or policy
  • Assume the responsibilities of Charge Nurse if no other registered nurse is present, or if assigned those duties by the shift supervisor or other authorized individual
  • Perform team leading duties to include making patient care assignments for subordinate nursing staff and being responsible for care provided
  • Utilize and provide guidance to appropriate medical personnel to assist in delivery of care when indicated (LPNs/paraprofessionals)
  • Obtain patient's history; perform appropriate complete physical assessment of patient; develop and document plan of care based on identified nursing problems; assess vital signs and provide care; accordingly, document plan of care and care given in patient's medical record
  • Electronic Health Record System - Mandatory use of medical database for keeping records, ordering of ancillary procedures, ordering of medications, writing doctor's orders, schedule follow-up visits and performing other required patient functions
  • Prepare and administer medications to include topical, oral, rectal, intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenous, respiratory, blood/blood products administration, IV therapy, and IV push
  • Perform respiratory treatment via nebulizer, perform and instruct patient in use of incentive spirometer, perform chest physiotherapy
  • Possess knowledge of actions and usual dosages of most commonly used emergency drugs and their location on crash carts; instruct patient regarding prescribed medication/therapies; assess patient's knowledge level, implement plan of instructions and record demonstrated level of understanding; assess and document patient response to medication administered
  • Recognize and initiate appropriate life saving measures in emergency situations in the absence of a physician; operate defibrillator, EKG machine, cardiac monitor, and other lifesaving equipment and be able to identify abnormalities
  • Apply principles of Infection Control and Safety. Adhere to the Centers for Disease Control guidelines concerning standard precautions and MEDDAC Infection Control Program
  • Assure content and correctness of prepared reports and sign the documents to validate their contents; submit prepared documents IAW Standard Operating Procedures before the end of the assigned shift
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to independently manage unit; provide care to all categories of Med-Surg patients independently to include but not limited to General Surgery, EENT, Gynecological Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, General Medicine, and Urology
  • Plan comprehensive nursing care for Med-Surg patients; implementing the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation) and aspects of nursing care appropriate to the unit; collecting and recording data pertaining to patient health status; using patient data to determine nursing diagnosis and preparing an individual plan of care to meet the patient's needs
  • Implement nursing care plans which include initiating nursing actions designed to promote, maintain, and restore the patient's well-being; giving complete personal care of assisting patients in personal care; administering physician prescribed medications; performing therapeutic measures and procedures as describe by the physician or required as a standard of nursing practice; applying scientific knowledge to resolve problems related to physical, physiological, psychological, social behavior or rehabilitative needs; incorporating teaching and learning activities into an action plan; observing, evaluating, documenting and reporting patient signs/symptoms and response to therapy; safely operating patient care equipment; recognizing, interpreting and recording patients' signs and symptoms, and abnormal values that require the notification and/or intervention of a physician; providing health care instructions to patients and/or family; providing supportive care to patients and family during terminal illness
  • Provide nursing care to adult, geriatric and pediatric patients based upon assessed nursing needs of the patient. This care includes but is not limited to administer other complex treatments such as total enteral feeding, parenteral administration of electrolytes and fluids; perform various pulmonary ventilation treatments such as administration of oxygen and compressed air through various means; manage nasal-pharyngeal and gastric suction as well as a variety of other drainage tubes
  • Effectively document care provided on electronic charting
  • Crosstrain and float to alternate units during staffing shortage or needs
  • Participate in performance improvement projects, chart, and peer reviews
