About the Indiana Veterans' Home:

The Indiana Veterans' Home is located in West Lafayette, Indiana. Originally created to care for veterans of the Civil War, the Indiana Veterans’ Home welcomed its first resident in 1896. Located on 250+ acres in West Lafayette, IVH is a full-service care facility offering a complete array of services for residents.

Role Overview:

Functions as a driver in the nursing department of the Indiana Veterans' Home to drive state vehicles for the purpose of driving facility residents to and from outside facility appointments, and to pick up/deliver items. Minimal supervision while driving.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $16.24/hr but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Drive residents to and from outside facility appointments

Pick up residents from the hospital after discharge

Ensure vehicle is clean, road-ready, and safe to drive

Pick up supplies and other equipment as needed

Keep spill kit available and use as needed

Keep vehicle supplied with water and other resident care items as indicated

Non-essential Duties/Responsibilites:

Deep cleaning of vehicles

Complete required paperwork necessary when driving a facility vehicle

Other related duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

Ability to obtain and maintain current Indiana Passenger Chauffer license; ability to drive in all types of weather; practical knowledge of vechicle maintenance; must be flexible and able to judge distances and routes to use for most efficient fuel use and safety of residents; must be able to properly strap wheelchairs and other transport chairs in vehicles

Supervisory Responsibilties/Direct Reports:

No supervisory responsibilities; reports to Director of nursing

Difficulty of Work:

Work schedule is determined by appointment calendar; Judgement is required to be able to make quick decisions when faced with road hazaards

Responsibility:

Works following a pre-set schedule for appointments; however, most work is performed independently and driver must make appropriate decisions when driving duties affect the safety and health of others

Personal Work Relationships:

Contact with residents, IVH staff, families, and staff from outside facilities

Physical Effort:

Work requires ability to sit and drive for long periods of time; may be required to assist residents into the vehicle, use or proper body mechanics

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
