Histology Technician
Job Description
The Histology Technician is responsible for obtaining and preparing tissue specimens from various body tissues to perform microscopic examination. This position performs and demonstrates proficiency and understanding of grossing the specimen, fixation, cutting, mounting on slides, and staining of tissue samples for the dermatopathology's to examine. The Histology Technician is responsible for prioritizing testing procedures, completing those procedures in an accurate and timely manner, and maintaining proper and accurate records of all tests done in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulations.
Responsibilities
Perform complex histological procedures using a variety of techniques such as grossing, staining, drying, and freezing to preserve and test the samples.
Prepare tissue specimens for routine and special procedures to obtain a patient diagnosis.
Access and gross tissue specimens.
Process specimens including embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping, and filing.
Prepare slides of specimens using specified stain to enhance visibility under microscope.
Trim tissue specimens into blocks and fix tissue in fixing solution or formalin.
Examine and study slides under microscope to detect deviations from norm and report abnormalities which may require further study.
Record and analyze data.
Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and store samples as per established policies and procedures.
Maintain, clean, and repair equipment and instruments as per established procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
Establish and monitor quality control programs and perform required quality control, maintenance, and quality assurance.
Essential Skills
Proficiency in histology, including techniques such as grossing, staining, microtome use, sectioning, and immunohistochemistry.
Experience with pathology and accessioning.
1 year of Mohs experience is preferred.
2+ years of histology experience.
Certification as a Histotech is highly preferred.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Ability to prepare media, chemicals, and reagents.
Strong attention to detail and ability to detect abnormalities under a microscope.
Experience in maintaining and repairing laboratory equipment.
