Job Description

The Canada Segment Financial Reporting Shared Service Centre (FSSC) is a dynamic team of high-energy Finance professionals who act as trusted advisors to the Canadian Segment business divisions and the Finance leadership team.

Reporting to the AVP, FSSC, the Director, Financial Reporting is responsible for leading and inspiring a team in producing quality financial packages for the Group Insurance and Canadian Annuities businesses. The Director will be responsible for managing the team through the monthly and quarterly reporting of financial results and analysis and provide insight into the key drivers through written commentary. To be successful, the Director must build strong relationships with all levels and fields throughout the global company including the Group Insurance and Canadian Annuities finance teams. The Director will also be responsible for Canadian segment accounting/reporting processes, including balance sheet account attestations.

Responsibilities:

  • As a key finance partner for the CFO of Group Insurance and the CFO of Individual Insurance, you will be responsible to optimize resources to fulfill the company vision and deliver quarterly and annual financial reports in accordance with the close schedule. Ensure adequate planning for the successful delivery of quality data and oversee adjustments as required. Provide valuable financial analysis and clear, concise commentary on results for a wider audience.

  • Establish effective relationships by building trust and credibility with Finance management across the Canadian Segment particularly the Business Unit CFOs and their teams.

  • Ability to communicate in a simplified and concise manner.

  • Maintain the high standards and spirit of the FSSC Service Level Agreement in interactions with Business Unit and Finance clients and in the leadership of the team.

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge regarding technical aspects of work. Able to review data for reasonability and identify root causes and drivers of the results.

  • Maintain a strong control environment and ensure that SOX controls continue to effectively mitigate risks.

  • Use appropriate judgment in dealing with issues and requests, demonstrating the ability to effectively prioritize work, balance resource requirements and determine solutions.

  • This role requires strong technical understanding of valuation complexities and familiarity with IFRS 17.

  • Working with various business partners, champion the development and implementation of the CAO transformation goals.

  • Build effective business partnerships with leaders and staff of other teams and SSC’s, including the Expense COE, ASSC, Tax and Group Controllers.

  • Develop standard methodologies in policies, processes, and controls. Demonstrate commitment towards continuously updating knowledge and skills.

  • Play a key role as part of the FSSC leadership team in the achievement of FSSC and segment-wide projects, the goals of operational improvement and standard methodologies in financial reporting.

What we are looking for

  • Accounting designation (CPA) with 8+ years of relevant experience in progressive accounting roles (Life Insurance experience a definite asset)

  • University degree or equivalent experience in business, finance

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate, negotiate, and influence effectively

  • Self-starter; work independently, particularly in the area of using sound, independent judgment, problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Actively motivates and contributes to building team member capabilities by adjusting their leadership style to each individual/situation

  • Results-oriented, able to lead expectations, work under tight timelines and handle challenging priorities

  • Excellent customer focus and commitment to quality

  • Demonstrated leadership skills to inspire, engage and provide clear direction to staff while coaching and motivating to achieve objectives

  • Strong business acumen with ability to communicate complex financial concepts and results in a clear, concise, easy to understand manner (verbal & written).

Salary & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Primary Location

Waterloo, Ontario

Salary range is expected to be between

$98,400.00 CAD - $177,120.00 CAD
