Description of Work

This is an entry-level position located in the District 2 Engineer’s office in Watauga County. Employee in this position will support higher level technicians and Engineers in areas such as construction, materials sampling and testing, construction traffic control, design, surveys, and/or program/regulatory compliance. Position requires the performance of standardized tests, accurate record keeping, and making measurements and calculations of pay quantities in order to ensure contractor compliance with contract, plans, and specifications and adequate project documentation. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, assist in project related survey work using various surveying equipment including GPS to provide proper line and grade for the construction of various roadways, structures, construction operations; independently performing a variety of calculations and computations to determine contract pay quantities; inspection for compliance and/or code; collection, organization and analysis of field data; review, modification and/or design of plans; analysis of engineering related data, products, and/or functions. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Employee will be expected to perform duties without constant supervision and must be able to read resource materials to determine answers to simple surveying requirements and inspections. Employee must be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner; both orally and written; and must have computer experience, including iPad and software. Employee must be able to maintain a positive working relationship with others.

Additional Expectations:

Employee responsibilities also include placing survey stakes, operating surveying instruments, cutting brush, and running test on materials, all in accordance with established policy and procedures. Employee will be responsible to inspect roadway and bridge projects. Position requires that employee have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments and equipment, to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure component, and to climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. Employee may be expected to exercise limited decision making and judgement. Must be able to safely perform manual tasks involving the use of bush axes and other tools on steep and rough terrain. Must be able to apply Department safety program to operations. Must be able to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards present on construction sites including traffic, heights, and traversing rough, steep, and uneven terrain. Employee in this position will be subject to high volumes of traffic and extreme temperatures/weather conditions. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing. Safely perform manual tasks involving the use of bush axes, sledgehammers and other tools. Work includes emergency situations, nights, and weekends. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. A valid NC Driver’s License is preferred. Safety toe shoes are required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
