Position Title: Summer Camp Nurse

Corps/Department: Salvation Army, King's Lake Camp

Reports To: Divisional Youth and Candidates Secretary (DYCS)

FLSA Status: Temporary, Full-time; Non-Exempt

Dates of Employment: June 18, 2024 - August 5, 2024

Scope of Position: Plan and carry out a total program of health and safety for the camp community. Guide Camp Counselors in their responsibilities for their camper's health and wellbeing. Administer all medications and treatments according to physician's order and maintain all records.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age with a current driver's license with acceptable driving and criminal history reports.
  2. Active LPN, RN, or EMS/EMT license within the State of Alaska is preferred. Position is open to students in an accredited nursing program in Alaska, as well.
  3. Must have CPR and First Aid Certification.
  4. Experience handling medication management is preferred.
  5. Prior experience as a Nurse working with children is preferred.
  6. Room and Board is provided as Summer Camp Nurse must be able to stay at camp while camp is in session.

Essential Functions:

  1. Administer health history and immunization record intake and review provided medical history during the registration of all arriving campers.
  2. With the assistance of other staff members, examine each camper upon their arrival at camp for lice, communicable diseases, and signs of abuse.
  3. Inform, in writing, the Summer Cook of all documented food allergies/intolerance/diseases regarding campers.
  4. Inform, in writing, Camp Counselors of medical concerns/issues regarding campers.
  5. Administer all medication to campers and staff daily during sessions as indicated by prescriptions.
  6. Administer first aid and care for minor illnesses and advise if offsite treatment is needed.
  7. Facilitate overnight care for ill or injured campers in the Nurse's Station.
  8. Notify parents of health-related incidents involving their child at camp by phone, letter, or email.
  9. Keep accurate records of daily medical log, camper medical history, and incident reports.
  10. Secure Nurse's Station whenever not in use, including both building entrance and inner cabinet doors.
  11. Upkeep Nurse's Station: sanitize, launder bedding, dispose of medical waste.
  12. Keep an ongoing and accurate inventory of all health and medical supplies and inform the DYCS of anything that is needed.
  13. Stock and issue first-aid kits to assigned personnel.
  14. Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to campers.
  15. Actively participate in the spiritual formation of campers and staff.
  16. Ensure campers respect personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  17. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  18. Ensure campers adhere to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  19. Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  20. Maintain a standard of cleanliness in personal grooming and living quarters.
  21. Assists in clean-up of the camp at the end of sessions/summer.
  22. Follow the KLC Covenant.
  23. Assists with all other duties as assigned.

Protect the Mission: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.

Driver Requirements: Must be a licensed driver with an acceptable driving history. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Cou se.

Work Environment: Regular exposure to weather conditions. Most work is performed in a heated and ventilated setting.

Physical Demands:

  1. Ability to speak, sit, walk, stand, bend, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent basis; to grasp, reach, handle, finger, push or pull objects.
  2. Ability to see and hear at normal ranges with corrective devices, if necessary.
  3. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., or more with assistance.
  4. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in daylight, darkness, or in inclement weather conditions.
