DCG Communications Writer and Communications Specialist in Washington, District Of Columbia

DCG Communications (DCG) is seeking a well-rounded, motivated, and proactive Writer and Communications Specialist to join our team and in support of our work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Our client's mission is to serve as a trusted resource and a catalyst for the growth of effective partnerships at the national, state, and community level and advances the health and wellbeing of Veterans through exploration of innovative, safe, and ethical emerging therapies. Our team provides internal and external communications, communications planning, creative development (digital and traditional), and web and social support and planning. 

In this role you will provide: 

Written content development:

  • Produce clear, concise, error-free copy for: press releases, short articles, client campaign documents, fact sheets, newsletters, brochures, client correspondence, and other materials as needed.

  • Generate ideas for articles and other content that reflect the best practices in journalism and latest trends in digital media.

  • Develop creative content optimized for different social media platforms, tailored to their unique constraints and opportunities.

  • Develop workflow recommendations that enable our clients to improve and scale their content creation and audience development operations.

Web-specific support:

  • Provide recommendations for content placement and organization on the client’s internal and external-facing online properties.

  • Maintain and provide support for client’s site hosted on SharePoint

  • Develop and edit web-based content; provide recommendations on basic design and layout on the client’s internal and external-facing online properties, and provide quality control.

  • Track and report performance analytics and develop strategies for continuous improvement of digital communications initiatives.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with project manager, content leads, editors, and designers to ensure timely, high-quality, and effective digital dissemination of project-related content.

Social media and design support:

  • Develop and provide recommendations for social media content (research, writing, design, editing, and copyright of images) for distribution on VA social media channels, or through VA-approved partners’ social media channels.

  • Oversee social media and web platforms, develop strategic messaging for client materials and distribute content. Oversee social media platforms to drive client’s brand and program messaging and increase engagement with followers.

  • Work with in-house graphic design team to provide designed products in line with client branding.

Ensure consistently branded look and feel, including inclusion of images and graphics meeting client’s style guidelines, in all forms of communications.

  • Oversee editorial and social media projects with multiple work streams, managing the delivery of high-quality client deliverables within project timeline and budget goals.

What background, experience, and skills are a good fit?

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, public policy, or related field.

  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in communications, media relations, business or technical writing, or a related field, preferably at a public relations firm/agency.

  • Experience creating and executing social media campaigns for federal or commercial clients.

  • Experience with common content management systems and back-end platforms such as WordPress.

  • Strong written communication skills with proven ability to present, write, edit and organize thoughts in a clear, concise, and well-organized and well-articulated manner.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities to produce high-quality work on deadline.

  • Ability to change voice and writing style to fit the desired audience and purpose.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.

  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.

  • Ability to think proactively, take initiative, and see tasks through to completion with appropriate follow-up.

Preferred Experience: 

  • Experience creating written communication materials and content on behalf of federal clients highly preferred.
