Georgetown Univerisity Processing Archivist, Part-Time Temporary - William Franklin Sands Collection in Washington, District Of Columbia

The Processing Archivist, William Franklin Sands Collection is a part-time (20/hrs.) term position. This position will report directly to the Head of Archival Processing located in the Booth Family Center for Special Collections at the Georgetown University Library. The Processing Archivist will arrange, describe, preserve, and promote the William Franklin Sands Collection in accordance with professional best practices and institutional guidelines. The Processing Archivist will craft an online and searchable archival finding aid for the Sands Collection. The online finding aid will be posted on the department’s collection management platform—ArchivesSpace. The collection consists of 19th and 20th century materials that document the career of Ambassador William Franklin Sands, including items related to the Boxer Rebellion, Korean Empire, Russo-Japanese War, Central America, Panama Canal, Russian Revolution, and World War One. It includes correspondence, journals, diplomatic papers, and photographs. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Arrange, describe, and rehouse the Sands collection in accordance with archival best practices and Booth Family Center for Special Collections’ guidelines.

  • Create archival description using ArchivesSpace, import existing inventories and metadata into the system.

  • Assess and address preservation issues, recommending the selection of materials for digitization.

  • Staff the Booth Family Center for Special Collections reading room reference desk and reception desk as needed.

  • Facilitate access to materials for instruction sessions, promoting the collection through exhibition work, blog entries, and social media posts.

  • Contribute to the department’s reference and research services and outreach efforts, supporting the promotion of the collection through research, exhibition work, blog posts, and social media.

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Head of Archival Processing in the Booth Family Center for Special Collections. The term employee will collaborate with the archivists, librarians, curators, and staff of the Booth Family for Special Collections to support its reference services and research services. The position has direct, regular contact with Library staff, as well as direct (in person) and indirect (via email, phone, chat) contact with researchers on a regular basis. S/he works with the Library’s Metadata Services unit on cataloging questions and metadata standards.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science and/or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline with archival management and special collections training, or equivalent education and experience

  • One or more years of professional experience in an archival setting

  • Experience preparing DACS-compliant finding aids in an archival content management system, such as ArchivesSpace, Archivist Toolkit, or Archon

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and organizational skills

  • Knowledge of basic preservation interventions for manuscript materials

  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with others in a dynamic team environment

  • Experience working with manuscript collections and staffing a special collections service point preferred

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$21.16 - $35.29

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
