The Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University (http://cset.georgetown.edu) (CSET) is a research organization focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers. CSET currently focuses on artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and biotechnology.

The Managing Editor will oversee CSET’s daily publication operations, supervise the work of contract copy editors, and ensure that outputs are published in accordance with CSET’s publication process. The Managing Editor will serve as the main point of contact for CSET’s publication pipeline, ensuring quality control and accuracy of the internal tracking of publications, shepherding products through to publication, and maintaining professional relationships with the media. The incumbent will serve as the lead editor for publications, including but not limited to reports, opinion pieces, and other content authored by CSET researchers. The Managing Editor will report to the Director of Communications and Strategic Engagement and has duties that include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the production of standard CSET publications and op-eds, developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive standard and op-ed production strategies aligned with CSET’s mission, culture and goals.

  • Oversee the final stages of the CSET publication production cycle from the time reports are submitted to the queue through publication and distribution.

  • Collaborate with key colleagues to formulate a comprehensive production and marketing strategy, tracking op-eds and placement success rates and ensuring strategic placement and diversification of CSET’s outreach.

  • Approve pitches, assisting in the development of opinion pieces, and managing content timelines.

  • Monitor and manage the CSET publications inbox, building researcher writing and networking skills to improve the quality and timeliness of op-eds and blogs through trainings, job aids/guidance, and brownbags.

  • Serve as the lead editor for standard CSET publications, editing and refining policy papers, reports, and other publications.

  • Oversee the editorial process for standard CSET products, managing contract/student editors, ensuring quality control and consistency, and serving as the main point of contact for editorial questions and concerns.

  • In consultation with CSET directors and LOR Leads, identify opportunities to capitalize on the rapidly changing news cycle to pitch and publish op-eds.

  • Maintain and manage an accurate tracker of CSET op/eds, cultivating relationships with the media for op-ed placement and other strategic engagements.

  • Identify and coordinate opportunities to repurpose outputs in support of CSET’s production and marketing strategy, such as social media postings, new blog posts, visualizations, and inclusion in the newsletter.

  • Contribute to CSET’s organizational development, including internal working groups, seminars, and discussions, as well as supporting and mentoring colleagues.

  • Upholding CSET’s mission, values and culture, performing additional duties as assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (i.e international affairs, political science, journalism)

  • 6+ years of editing experience, preferably in policy or academic settings

  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills with demonstrated expertise in translating complex analyses into actionable policy insights

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills with demonstrated project management experience

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Proficiency with office productivity tools like Google Docs/Sheets and Microsoft Office

  • Ability to work successfully in a collaborative matrixed/multi-disciplinary environment

  • Motivated, enthusiastic, intellectually curious and self-driven

Work Mode Designation

This position has been designated as Hybrid 2-3 days per week. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. This position is based in the United States and offers no relocation assistance. This position is not eligible for a specialty-occupation sponsorship and, accordingly, this position requires that all applicants be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship from Georgetown University. The Managing Editor can expect to earn an annual starting salary of $105,000, commensurate with experience, and have access to Georgetown’s generous benefits package.     Pay Range:

    The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$54,616.00 - $100,493.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
