Smithsonian Institution Electronics Technician (Fire Alarm Systems) in Washington, District Of Columbia

Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). OFMR provides the Smithsonian Institution with a full range of building services through maintenance and operational zones, pan-institutional horticultural support services, and systems engineering support. Responsibilities As the Electronics Technician (Fire Alarm Systems), the incumbent will serve under the general supervision of the Life Safety Group Supervisor. In this position, you will: Perform and direct the installation, repair, testing, and troubleshooting or major integrated electronic systems such as intelligent addressable fire alarm systems and related fire detection and suppression systems. Apply engineering concepts, principles and practices related to supervision, environmental control, major integrated mechanical and electrical systems. Provide technical guidance on maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of fire control systems. Write detailed engineering specification for maintenance/repair of major fire control systems, preventive maintenance reports, comments on building specifications, etc. Requirements Conditions of Employment Pass Pre-employment Background Investigation May need to complete a Probationary Period Maintain a Bank Account for Direct Deposit/Electronic Transfer Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service. Qualifications Experience: For the GS-9, you qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as having knowledge and experience installing, repairing, and troubleshooting integrated electronics systems used in the management of an fire alarm systems or similar systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Basic knowledge and experience performing preventive maintenance, testing, and servicing of electronic components and related devices such as fire dampers or fire pumps. They have some knowledge of both wet and dry pipe fire suppression systems. OR FOR THE GS-09 ONLY, THE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED WITH THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION: Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. (related to the position). Must provide college transcripts with application. For the GS-11, you qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as having knowledge and experience installing, repairing, and troubleshooting integrated electronics systems used in the management of an fire alarm systems or similar systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Knowledge and experience performing preventive maintenance, testing, and servicing of electronic components and fire dampers or fire pumps. They possess expansive knowledge of both wet and dry pipe fire suppression systems. For the GS-12, you qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as having knowledge and understanding of building and fire codes and standards; experience installing, troubleshooting/repairing fire alarms, fire suppression and fire damper systems; reviewing designs, specifications, and cost estimates; and providing technical guidance to junior technicians, enhancing team capabilities and knowledge. AND For the GS-12 you will need the following: National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) certification (level-3) in the area of Fire Alarm Systems and at least one other NICET certification in any other field of fire protection; and an associate degree in electronics, engineering, fire protection, or a related field and fire protection experience. Must provide college transcripts with application. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Education Additional Information This position is included in the bargaining unit.
