Bus Driver II for Traffic and Parking - Planning and Facilities Management - Georgetown University

The Bus Driver II operates all sizes of University transit vehicles along all published routes and scheduled charters in compliance with local, federal and University regulations governing transit vehicle operations to provide safe and efficient mass transit operations for the Georgetown University community.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Transportation Management, along with 10-15 other bus drivers working in both full-time and part-time positions, the Bus Driver II has duties that include but are not limited to:

Vehicle Operation

  • Operate all types of University mass transit vehicles to transport University employees, students and visitors within campus and to and from off campus locations

  • Operate buses on daily scheduled routes to pick up students from Metro and bus stops and other off-campus locations

  • Operate other equipment, such as golf carts, for on-campus transportation

  • If assigned, operate especially equipped vans to transport students/employees with disabilities

  • Check IDs or passes and/or collect money

Inspections and Maintenance

  • Conduct pre-trip inspections and perform routine maintenance to ensure the vehicle is clean and safe to operate

  • Check engine, oil and other fluids, brakes and lights

  • Take corrective action as necessary – for example, adding fluid, changing light bulbs or informing supervisor of a problem

  • Checks bus/van for cleanliness and cleans as necessary

Regulation Compliance

Follow all local motor vehicle laws and regulations and applicable University rules and guidelines to ensure efficient and safe transportation of passengers

Communications

  • Communicate with supervisor or other authorized department personnel in accordance with department guidelines to ensure effective communications

  • Carry a two-way radio at all times while on duty to enable department staff to notify driver of problems and special needs and to keep dispatcher notified of time of arrival and departure at each stop

  • Notify supervisor immediately of problems relating to bus operation, customer complaints and related matters

  • Complete and submit vehicle inspection, accident and similar reports to enable department to maintain a written record of regular maintenance and problems

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency

  • At least 6 months of experience operating passenger buses and vans or similar public service or an equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Commercial Driver’s License – Class B with air brake qualifications and passenger endorsement from jurisdiction where candidate resides

Candidate selected for employment must successfully complete a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and a background check.
