Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

The Role

We are part of the broader JS Platform organization, and we are champions for UI (browser) application teams at Netflix. Our mission is to empower them to easily create, share, and discover UI components and libraries. We help them focus on innovation by reducing the complexity of building and managing software. Developer experience runs deep in our DNA and influences every facet of our work.

We are one of three squads that comprise the larger JavaScript Platform team. Our focus for the next few years will be on the "UI Paved Road" aka the golden path, for UI Engineers at Netflix. We will build comprehensive tooling and technologies used by hundreds of engineers, and deliver developer happiness throughout the software development experience. We define our success by our ability to accelerate productivity across Netflix engineering.

The team anchors on the human-facing elements of technology emphasized in our Culture Memo (https://jobs.netflix.com/culture) and are applied in our day-to-day work. Code is a very small slice of this team's impact.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the team. You will bootstrap and finalize the charter for this new team, and chart a long term vision over the next few years. As a part of the larger JavaScript Platform team, this team will be critical in helping us enable and empower UI teams at Netflix.

The team will be responsible for our internal design system ( Hawkins Professional (https://netflixtechblog.com/hawkins-diving-into-the-reasoning-behind-our-design-system-964a7357547) ) and a new inner source platform for discovering, publishing, and managing the lifecycle of UI components across our platform.

What You Will Do

  • Partner with our Product Manager to define and execute the long-term vision for component discovery, publishing, and lifecycle management

  • Define how we measure the success and effectiveness of our products and drive the execution and continuous evaluation of those metrics

  • Create strong partnerships with Netflix engineers by creating continuous feedback loops that allow us to understand their problems better and address them in a highly leveraged manner

  • Work closely with System Designers, UI Engineers, Engineering Managers, and other stakeholders to ensure tools and platforms meet user needs

  • Drive continuous improvements by staying up to date with industry trends and emerging design system technologies

  • Foster an inclusive and psychologically safe engineering team by promoting open communication, encouraging diverse perspectives, and implementing practices that ensure all team members feel valued and supported

What We’re Looking For

  • Technical Platform Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading a developer tooling or design system engineering team, providing support and enabling front end engineers to effectively utilize tools

  • Front End Tooling Development: Understanding of modern front end technologies (React, JavaScript/Typescript, Node.js), design system libraries, and inner source platforms.

  • Communication : Excellent written and verbal communication skills; timely communication with clear expectations. Ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

  • Collaboration : Experience working in cross-functional and international teams

  • Judgment: Ability to leverage product intuition and judgment to solve problems and make decisions without perfect information

Why Join Us?

  • Be at the forefront of defining how UI developers at Netflix discover, publish, and use shareable components

  • Work with a passionate and talented international team!
