Indian Health Service Health Technician in Wanblee, South Dakota

Summary This position is under the direct supervision of the Nurse Supervisor for the Wanblee Health Center. The incumbent will provide support services to a variety of clinical health care providers under standardized procedures. Such duties include task involving basic and advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide variety of patient conditions and treatments in both inpatient and outpatient setting. Responsibilities Will rotate through clinical departments to accommodate work related functions in support to the Registered Nurse, Health Care Provider, and Physician as needed. Provide ancillary support services that involves standardized procedures in a variety of nursing care tasks. Perform initial patient screening, collect patient documents to identify acute and chronic health needs. Recognize changes in patients' medical and/or behavioral health conditions through observation. Use of a variety of automated system to records patient information, routine communication instruments, and respond to official healthcare inquiries and correspondence request, order medical supplies and provide general maintenance duties. Provide routine care instructions to patients and representatives regarding medical procedures and follow up care. Responsible to notify appropriate health care official of patient conditions or changes in treatment. *This position is being announced concurrently under the Delegated Examining (DE) procedures. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) In order to meet the basic requirement of 0640 occupational series, applicants must have technical experience in support to healthcare providers using knowledge, methods, and techniques under the supervision of a specialty provider. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-04: Six (6) months general experience and six (6) months specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service. Examples Include: support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. OR Two (2) years of study above high school level that includes at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the advertised position. OR Combination of education and experience that when combined fully meets the minimum qualifications for this position. GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Examples Include: initial patient screening for vital signs, temperature, pulse or assisting in tracking lab results, discharge summaries, and construction of patient reports, medical record maintenance, respond to patient inquiries, order medical supplies, and transport patients' various divisions throughout the clinic. OR Four (4) year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related with at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the Health Technician occupation. OR Combination of education and experience that when combined fully meets the minimum qualifications for this position. GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Examples Include: patient screening, determine patient severity, respond to emergency code procedures, conduct minor procedure exams, collect patient specimens, serve as chaperone, inspect and prepare medical equipment, education patients to general health preventative measures. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a 6 month service agreement will be required. This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval.
