POSITION PURPOSE Whitman College Semester in the West is an intensive, 3-month field program exploring environmental, social, and political issues in the interior American West, from the forests of the Northwest to the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico. The program will host 21 students, one full time professor, two staff members (field manager and technical manager), and several part-time faculty who will join us for various periods throughout the semester. This position will work 40 hours per week from approximately August 11, 2025 to December 19, 2025. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES • Manage the Program's electronic information systems, including our internet system, our internal server, and our solar power system. • Manage the program's website, updating it regularly as we travel and setting it up for "rest" mode when we return from the field. • Set up and troubleshoot email accounts as needed. • Assist students to help make the most of our information technology. (Set up our system as a proxy server to access databases normally available only on campus, assist students with internet searches, put useful links on our website, assist students with presentation software, etc.) • Troubleshooting (printers, camp equipment, etc) • Assist instructors with field software (ideally, with ArcGIS) • Assist students and instructors with audio and photo technology for podcast and photo projects. • Help facilitate SITW's presence on social media, which may include Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or the like. • Drive Program Vehicles as needed. • Together with the Director and Field Manager, the technical manager will be responsible for monitoring safety concerns on the program, including but not limited to vehicles, camp systems, and safety when in transit. • Miscellaneous Tasks as directed by the Program Director: errands to town, group troubleshooting, sexual misconduct contact person, etc. • Assist Field Manager when needed. • Update the Tech Manager Manual at the end of the program.
