Description of Work

Salary Grade: NC09 Salary Range: $38,516 to $67,404

The primary purpose of Location & Surveys is to serve as support services in providing engineering analysis, mapping and other data for the design of transportation facilities and the acquisition of property for the construction of transportation facilities. The Location and Surveys Unit is looking to hire an Engineering Technician who will serve primarily as a member of a field survey crew.

In this position you will:

  • operate various field survey equipment in the performance of more complex technical assignments in connection with highway route location surveys of projects in the field or office.

  • perform a variety of complex CADD and computer operations in surveying and creating plan sheets and survey data for TIP projects, including hydraulic surveys, complex horizontal alignments, setting of photogrammetric controls, property condemnations, and Global Positioning System (GPS) field work.

  • utilize independent judgment in the application of standard civil engineering practices and procedures.

  • have your work reviewed by higher level technicians or engineers as part of an engineering survey group.

  • supervise a survey team in moderately complex field operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience using CADD and computer equipment in the design of highways (topographic features, hydrographic information, utility locations, property boundaries, elevations etc.), digital terrain model (DTM) files, preparation of preliminary or final versions of property condemnation maps

  • Experience planning, directing, overseeing, and leading the work of lower-level technicians in primarily survey field and some office work.

  • Experience working with field survey equipment, i.e. total stations, GNSS receivers.

  • Experience in developing maps/plans utilizing CADD software.

  • Knowledge of standards, principles, and practices of surveying in North Carolina.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
