Salary Grade: NC24 Salary Range: $82,011.00 – $159,922.00

The Hydraulics Unit provides technical expertise, guidance, design, and quality assurance to manage stormwater, riverine and coastal impacts in and around roadways for the protection of the public, the environment and NCDOT assets at every transportation project phase.

We are looking for an Assistant State Hydraulics Engineer to work in our Raleigh, NC office.

In the position you will:

  • Manage delivery of hydraulic designs for TIP projects, state funded bridges and other Operations programs.

  • Oversee and facilitate professional development of Hydraulics Unit staff.

  • Provide project engineers and professional engineering firms with guidance on major technical decisions, policy interpretations and study criteria.

  • Coordinate Hydraulics Unit design, special tasks, drainage complaints/studies, and support functions.

  • Manage the Highway Stormwater Program and extreme weather response.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic design practices and their application and associated environmental requirements to all phases of highway planning, design, construction, and maintenance.

  • Experience managing the operation of a group of professionals in accomplishing goals.

  • Experience applying engineering principles to difficult design situations and making sound recommendations and decisions.

  • Experience utilizing advanced hydrologic/hydraulic design and modeling procedures.

  • Thorough knowledge of laws, regulations and policies that apply to area of administration.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of six years progressive engineering experience including four years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
