What we want

The Veterinary Technician II in Food Animal Medicine, Surgery and Field Services is responsible for providing care and treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Administers treatments to animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under supervision of the professional staff. Provides clinical assistance to the professional staff and maintains a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty. Provides quality customer service to internal and external customers/clients.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills.

  • General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital preferred.

  • Ability to multi-task, detail oriented, and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to perform sterile surgical preps and identify surgical instrument needs.

  • Strong knowledge of normal patient vitals and behavior.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician.

  • One year experience in Large Animal Veterinary Medical setting

  • Experience in food animal handling

  • Experience in surgical caseload or operating room

  • General understanding of equipment used in the area of specialization, such as anesthetic machines, monitoring equipment, surgical instruments, and sterile fields.

  • Efficient in operating food animal referral hospital specific equipment (ultrasound, tilt table, manual/hydraulic chutes, slings, surgery tables, gates).

  • Ability to demonstrate knot tying skills.

  • Efficient time management skills and detail oriented.

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Provides clinical support to faculty veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of primary care, diagnostic services, sterile/surgical procedures, and zoonotic disease control. Safely restrains multiple species of animals (pig, sheep, goats, camelids, cattle, cervids etc.…). Obtains patient history with good client communication skills. Performs and directs blood draws and IV catheter placement on multiple species of. Performs and assists with bandage/cast changes. Performs proper aseptic technique during sterile procedures. Passes oral/nasal tubes. Performs medication administration (SQ, IM, IV), vaccinations, and deworming of multiple animal species. Assists in dystocias of multiple species. Assists/Performs in the induction and instruction of general anesthesia. Monitors patients under anesthesia or sedation with appropriate paperwork and monitoring. Foams/disinfects exam rooms throughout the ward. Transports patients to CT under anesthesia or sedation for consistent monitoring. Administers fluid therapy/blood transfusions. Performs euthanasias. Maintains patient cleanliness and grooming. Performs and assists with bandage changes. Assists, teaches, and performs proper aseptic technique during sterile procedures. Administers and monitors patient diets as prescribed. Collects patient blood, urine, feces, and tissues. Enters fees for patient invoices. Reads animal behaviors (aggressive, frightened) and responds accordingly. Checks restocking and submits pharmacy orders. Maintains and completes patient medical records. Calculates and draws up drugs (controlled/not controlled). Communicates professionally with clients, DVMs, team members, and other services. Ensures and oversees appropriate biosecurity measures around the ward and between patients. Performs critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed. Assists with radiology and ultrasound. Assists and oversees recovery of anesthetized patients.

  • Teaching and Clinical Research: Instructs, guides, and supervises DVM students and student workers in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. May assist in various continuing education seminars or skills labs.

  • Maintaining safe, clean, sanitary work environment: Follows all biosecurity requirements for the food animal ward (appropriate PPE, foot baths etc..).

  • Required Training, compliance, and administrative procedures: Remains current with various TAMU and department specific training courses. Maintains appropriate rabies prophylaxis. Maintains appropriate certification or licensure where applicable. Assists in other departments as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
