General Summary

The City of Charlottesville Transportation Department is seeking qualified candidates to be considered for the position of Transit Bus Technician who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.

The preferred hiring amount will be between $20.14 and $29.11 an hour ( $41,891.20 - $60,548.80 Annually) . Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays plus 1 floating holiday, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement (up to $34 a month), tuition reimbursement (up to $3,000 per fiscal year), and continuing education/training opportunities.

    Under limited supervision, this position performs highly skilled work in the inspection, maintenance and repair of City heavy diesel powered transit buses, diesel-electric hybrid powered buses, cutaway buses, staff vehicles and equipment. Performs related work as required. Reports to the Assistant Director of Transit, Maintenance and Facilities.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, overhauls, and services heavy diesel powered transit buses, cutaway buses, diesel-electric hybrid powered buses, and staff vehicles, as well as related equipment;

  • Removes and tears down components and assemblies such as engines, multi-speed transmissions, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems and power trains, then rebuilds, adjusts, reinstalls, aligns and meshes such components and assemblies;

  • Operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools and devices;

  • Performs basic care and scheduled preventative maintenance, including changing oil, checking fluid levels, cleaning and lubricating parts and rotating tires;

  • Inspects City vehicles for compliance with safety and emission control standards;

  • Follows checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined;

  • Reads and interprets diagnostic test results to identify mechanical problems;

  • Responds to road calls and other emergency calls for service;

  • Test drives vehicles;

  • Installs bus stop amenities such as signs, sign poles, benches, and shelters;

  • Keeps records of inspections, test results, work performed and parts used;

  • Must be available and provide support in emergency situations;

  • Attends safety training;

  • Performs related work as required.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.

  • Five years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive equipment required.

  • (Related heavy diesel technical education/trade training above high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.)

  • Must possess a valid, commercial driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia within 90 days of start date.   • ASE Master Certification in Transit Bus (or ability to obtain certification within first year of service).

  • Requires possession of a Virginia State Inspectors License within six months of start date.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with heavy and/or specialized diesel equipment is highly preferred.

    Skills: Proficiency in the diagnosis, adjustment and repair of all assigned vehicles and equipment systems; Extensive knowledge of methods and tools commonly used by service technicians in the repair and maintenance of heavy diesel and industrial equipment; Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; Basic keyboarding skills; Ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other City employees; Ability to learn job related technical information, and to communicate such information to co-workers.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: VERY HEAVY WORK: Ability to lift in excess of 100 lbs. occasionally and/or in excess of 50 lbs. frequently and/or in excess of 20 lbs. constantly to move objects. (Specific to this position, maximum weight-lifting capacity may be up to 213 lbs.)

This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, and/or weather-related emergency on-call.

Position is subject to federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.

The majority of time spent in this position involves inside work which may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals/hazardous waste, gases/gas leaks, radiant energy, acidic or harsh substances, electrical hazards, extreme darkness, fumes/airborne particles, allergens, and fuels.

This position also requires the regular use of or subject to vibration, ladder/step stool, high or precarious places, traffic/roadways, driving light equipment, driving heavy equipment, driving a City vehicle, moving mechanical parts and/or confined space(s). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

  1. RETIREMENT: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan.

  • Choose from two options:

  • A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.

  • A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note that: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees)
