Description

If so, the Public Works Department's Technician I position in Street Maintenance may be the right career for you!

The Public Works Department Technician I in Street Maintenance is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $19.85 - $21.84 per hour (equivalent to $41,288 - $45,427 annually). Applicants who do not meet the qualifications for the Technician I level may be considered for another level within the department at an annual rate commensurate with applicant qualifications.

As a Technician I in Street Maintenance, you will:

  • Operate medium to large motorized equipment and make minor repairs to equipment;

  • Operate smaller handheld tools, including concrete saws, jackhammers with air compressors, and more;

  • Install, repair, maintain, and clean facilities and grounds;

  • Set forms and grades to pour sidewalks, curbs, ADA ramps, slabs, and foundations;

  • Screen and float fresh concrete, run edges, put in joints, and make decorative finishes and patterns;

  • Assist with a variety of duties, including but not limited to: street and utility construction and maintenance; building pits and forms as needed; cutting tree limbs; backfilling, seeding, and mulching grounds; inventory and data entry in a computer; leaf and brush collection, as needed; refuse collection, as needed; and snow and ice control.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements for Technician I Level:

  • High school diploma or GED and moderate (1-3 years) experience in the operation of motorized equipment used in facility and ground maintenance, including experience in concrete work. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted.

  • Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) required. (Applicants without a CDL will be considered for other levels and will be required to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire. On-the-job training is provided for candidates without a CDL.)

  • At least 18 years of age by hire date required.

  • Ability to participate in a rotating, stand-by work program for off-hours emergency response is required.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of current Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger Certification within one week of hire;

  • Possession of current VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification within six months of hire or as class scheduling permits.
