General Summary
The starting hiring amount is $20.03 an hour for this position. This is a substitute position, on an as-needed basis to maintain staff coverage during library hours.
This Substitute Reference Librarian position provides reader's advisory and reference services and assistance to patrons of all ages in the use of library resources and equipment; assists with some circulation tasks and general library duties; and in the absence of a manager may occasionally be called upon to serve as the acting manager employee in charge.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Provides reference and reader’s advisory for patrons of all ages.
Performs some general department and/or branch duties.
Performs work at a public service desk to provide reference and information assistance.
Answers reader's advisory questions including preparing teacher loans and patron subject requests as assigned.
Assists in collection management.
Conducts reference interviews in order to interpret questions and identify appropriate responses.
Assists in maintaining the collection including noticing gaps and outdated materials, participating in weeding, and planning for space needs and collection arrangement.
Maybe asked to perform ILL functions including verifying, processing requests, organizing and maintaining ILL records, gathering statistics, and contacting patrons.
Assists in selecting materials for the collection.
Assists with Interlibrary Loan services.
Sets up, troubleshoots, and performs routine maintenance of reference computers including software and printers.
Plans and coordinates electronic resources.
Oversees electronic services.
Oversees use of OCLC.
Promotes use of web pages and responds to JMRL web email.
Trains staff and public in using electronic resources including conducting workshops, preparing handouts, brochures, and other instructional materials.
Occasionally fills in when the manager is absent.
Performs other duties assigned.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
MLS degree from an ALA accredited school required.
Previous library experience and knowledge of general reference sources and a willingness to read both juvenile and young adult literature required.
Experience with MS Office suite and online reference resources required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three years of previous library work experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General knowledge of library practices.
Knowledge of reference materials including electronic information resources, online databases, and familiarity with Windows.
Knowledge of routine computer maintenance.
Knowledge of and ability to use library's print, electronic resources, and other library equipment.
Knowledge of and ability to follow library policies and procedures associated with public services such as the Internet, meeting rooms, displays, food and cell phone use, etc.
Familiarity with automated library systems.
Knowledge of and ability to use and oversee use of OCLC.
Knowledge of serials and ability to coordinate serials service system wide.
Ability to deal with routine problems and emergencies.
Requires good interpersonal skills and ability to be an effective team member.
A strong public service orientation.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information
Ability to push book trucks and other equipment, lift up to 30 pounds, and to stand, stoop, bend and carry. Contacts would include the branch manager, library staff, and the public. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

- RETIREMENT: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan.
Pension:
Choose from two options:
A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note that: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees)
