What you will do

The Staff Learning Scientist is critical for ensuring HMH solve the problems and produce inferences that support teachers and have evidence to ensure the inferences produced are valid and trustworthy. They do this by combining their experience in research and modeling with their expertise in learning theories, learning facilitation, and learner-centered design to build and validate models that drive theoretically coherent k-12 education products. They have demonstrable experience modeling student learning from product data, validating those models , and monitor ing the quality of their inferences while in production. They are critical for ensuring HMH solves the problems and produces inferences that support teachers and have evidence to ensure the inferences produced are valid and trustworthy. Moreover, the Staff Learning Scientist will serve as a critical liaison with UX design, providing guidance and substantive context for harmonizing model inferences and the user experiences that leverage them. They must think flexibly and creatively about research applications within specific product constraints and be able to clearly communicate ideas and findings to non-experts .

Responsibilities:

  • Model Development: Collaborate on creating and evaluating models to support K-12 student learning.

  • Validation Studies: Lead the design and execution of validation studies for models related to student learning.

  • Team Collaboration: Work with learning scientists, engineers, designers, product managers, and SMEs to develop and refine educational products.

  • Documentation: Create detailed documentation of work results, including white papers, memos, technical reports, and SOPs.

  • Leadership & Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior colleagues in product development.

    What you will need

    Education & Experience:

  • PhD in Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Educational Leadership, Research Methods, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, preferably in developing and evaluating educational technology products.

    Technical & Analytical Skills:

  • Verification & Validation: Experience designing verification and validation processes for educational technology products.

  • Research Design: Expertise in experimental and quasi-experimental design.

  • Modeling: Experience with model exploration, experimentation, and selection, including causal models, psychometric models, deep learning techniques, and Bayesian inference.

  • Machine Learning: Deep understanding of the Machine Learning lifecycle, best practices, algorithms, and domains.

  • Coding: Strong coding skills in R, Python, and SQL, with familiarity in software engineering principles such as testing, code reviews, and deployment.

  • Tech Stack: Proficiency in modern ML tech stack, including cloud-based environments (AWS SageMaker, Redshift, Snowflake), and version control systems like git.

  • Familiarity with model risk management frameworks such as NIST AI RMF.

    Communication & Collaboration:

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Ability to communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders and collaborate with leaders to ensure efficient communication channels.

  • Teamwork: Experience collaborating with and understanding the needs of stakeholders from various business functions and working with domain experts to leverage their expertise into solutions.

  • Project management : Demonstrated project management skills necessary to lead and direct multiple small-to-medium projects.

    Salary range: 120k -140k.
