Sr Underwriter – E&O – Professional Liability

As the Senior Underwriter for E&O - Professional Liability, your primary responsibility is to examine and evaluate new and renewing accounts for our Canadian E&O Professional Liability Practice, following established protocols and marketing guidelines. You will have the autonomy to manage underwriting activities and make independent decisions when processing accounts. Typically, Senior E&O Underwriters manage a portfolio worth $5 to $10 million GWP. 

Our Canadian E&O Professional Liability practice is distributed through retail partners and caters to the Middle Market to Large Complex accounts with an average premium of $35K. Our clients come from various industries, including architects, engineers, lawyers, media and film, and other miscellaneous professionals.

Work Profile 

This role offers three days a week hybrid work environment in our Toronto office. This position also requires regular travel to meet with brokers and clients face-to-face and attend industry and company events.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and manage an existing book of E&O business in adherence to company policies and processes

  • Developing new business and grow the business profitably

  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to increase AXIS’ market presence, Targeting Lower Middle Market Accounts

  • Identify target markets and develop relationships with existing and potential retail brokers 

  • Develop internal relationships with other profit centers and distribution staff

  • Work to become proficient in other related insurance products offered by AXIS

  • Participate in the development of overall strategy and assist in the implementation of strategic measures

  • Assist in implementing new products and developing process improvements

  • Provide guidance and feedback on underwriting practices to junior members of the team

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and developments

Candidate Profile

Senior Underwriter, E&O Professional Liability will be a “hands-on” technical expert with a history of success within a top-tier Commercial Insurance Carrier focused on building a book of E&O business targeting middle market to Complex Corporate Risks across architects, engineers, lawyers, media and film, and other miscellaneous professionals.

Candidates will have deep contacts within retail broker channels and full life cycle exposure to portfolio management across solicitation of submissions, underwriting analysis, preparing and issuing indications/quotations/binders, and marketing. 

Additionally, the candidate must have an executive presence, demonstrating success in communicating, influencing, and building solid relationships that add value to the AXIS book of business and contribute to longer-term strategic initiatives.

Desired Experience & Qualifications:

  • 3+ Years’ experience in Professional Liability or specialty insurance.

  • Understanding of risk management principles with an ability to analyze data and provide insights

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)

  • Proven marketing abilities and established relationships with brokers

  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Understanding of industry standards and trends

  • Candidate should be positive, energetic, and possess strong interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills

  • Strong organizational skills Team player mentality

  • Moderate travel as required for meetings and marketing.
