Job Summary

Under direction, is responsible for coordinating magistration efforts in the City Magistrate/Detention Center. This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of professional, and administrative duties. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Schedule

Training will take place on all three shifts:

  • 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

  • 2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

  • 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.

    Permanent schedule after training will be based on business needs but will be nights and weekends. This position supports 24/7 operation, which involves shift-work and rotating work schedules, including weekends and holidays.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists in the formulation of policies and procedures for the assigned department; compliance with the current City and department rules and regulations.

  • Supervises assigned staff.

  • Assists with monitoring and reviewing expenditures; provides information to appropriate department staff; and performs general administrative support functions.

  • Provides assistance to the public and law enforcement agencies.

  • Prepares correspondence for communication with other City departments.

  • Determines priority magistration for judge and moves processes in a timely manner.

  • Oversees and processes arrested persons into the Detention Center and complete all necessary reports, documents, and paperwork.

  • Intakes and updates municipal court violations when arrested party arrives in the City Magistrate/Detention Center.

  • Prepares payment agreements based on court orders, interview, and application information.

  • Performs administrative duties including, but not limited to report writing, activity documentation, statistical reporting, case processing, and filing; may organize and maintain filing systems; and maintain records related to specific areas of assignment.

  • Reviews National Crime Information Center, Texas Crime Information Center, and Texas Department of Public Safety (NCIC/TCIC/DPS) databases for criminal histories, warrant records, and driving records; updates NCIC/TCIC databases with warrant records, and conviction records reported to DPS.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Two (2) years of college from an accredited college or university.

  • Two (2) years of experience in administrative/office support.

  • Valid Texas Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center (TCIC/NCIC) Certification within one (1) year of employment and re-certified yearly.

  • Must maintain Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System Access (TLETS) eligibility for continued employment in position (TLETS provides access to TCIC and NCIC).

  • Must obtain the Municipal Court Clerk Certification, Level II within 18 months of date of hire.

  • Any applicant selected for this position must have a background check completed with results satisfactory to the City of San Antonio and successfully complete the City of San Antonio's Cash-Handling Certification Training.

  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years Criminal Justice Background; e xperience working in a court room and detention setting.

  • Two (2) years of college from an accredited college or university.

  • Two (2) years of experience in administrative/office support.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including shift-work, rotating schedules, holidays, and weekends.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of court procedures.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization and management.

  • Knowledge of Code of Criminal Procedures, regarding laws governing Class 'C' misdemeanors.

  • Knowledge of city, building, and fire codes.

  • Knowledge in deciphering court judgments.

  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.

  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.

  • Ability to interpret court documents and understand legal terminology.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position.

  • Ability to perform customer service.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, judges, and the general public.
