Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Senior Controls Engineering Technician Role

As a Senior Controls Engineering Technician, you will ensure the reliability and functionality of various controls systems at Colonial Pipeline. This includes PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, low voltage electrical components, and other end devices used to monitor and control the pipeline. The Senior Controls Engineering Technician provides technical support and consultation on upgrade processes and technical input for engineering processes and measurement. This role serves as an intermediary between the field and engineering to assist with design, implementation, and testing of controls systems. As a Senior Controls Engineering Technician, you are a subject matter expert and will serve as an intermediary between the field and engineering to assist with design, implementation, and testing of controls systems.

What You Get to Do:

  • Write and test basic PLC logic and HMI applications for control system implementation, installation, and upgrades for new and existing equipment to automate systems and update programs and processes for technical pipeline operations.

  • Consult with appropriate parties on proposed engineering projects, including initiations or changes, to ensure proper control system equipment operations are meeting the needs of the function.

  • Consult with appropriate parties on the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical and instrumentation equipment to ensure the reliability and functionality of all controls systems.

  • Ensure appropriate communication from system related devices to the PLC and from the PLC to local HMI and central SCADA systems.

  • Serve as a resource to support Controls Engineering by having all appropriate OQs and training of field technicians, as appropriate.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • High School Diploma or GED (General Education Diploma) from an accredited educational institution, including completed Technical degree/certification in a related field of study from an accredited educational institution.

  • Ideally, 3+ years of automation/ controls experience and 5+ years oil/ gas equipment maintenance experience.

  • Knowledge of programmable logic controllers, human machine interfaces and other computer programming languages.

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, pipeline equipment, instrumentation, measurement devices, PLC communications devices, low voltage electrical systems and wiring, pipeline operational and maintenance process/ procedures, and other end devices used to monitor and control the pipeline.

  • Ability to think systematically, adapt to change, plan, and organize effectively, make sound decisions, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to travel up to 40%, and up to 70% during peak and critical times.

  • Associates Degree in Engineering Field from an accredited college or university.

  • 5+ years total Maintenance/Electrical Technician experience with Industrial Process/Manufacturing Systems

  • 10+ years total experience supporting Industrial Automation systems

  • 5+ years Midstream Oil/Gas Pipeline and Terminal Controls System and Operations Support Experience

  • Experience supporting Truck Rack Loading/Offloading Systems, VCUs/VRUs, iFIX HMIs, Allen Bradely and Rockwell PLCs and HMIs, TAS (Terminal Automation Systems) including conversions efforts for TopTech and Dearman, Butane Blending Systems, Preset Controllers including Accuload and Multiload
