Job Description

The Research Specialist I, under general supervision p erforms semi-skilled, technical support research work involving performance of assignments requiring modification and adaptation to routine procedures. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on the successful completion of tasks assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compiles and reviews data and metadata.

  • Collects samples and measurement data from experiments. Implements and maintains data collection and summarization of field trials.

  • Performs analysis and tests. Makes and records observations and scientific measurement.

  • Extracts, collects and compiles data. Computes quantitates and extends projections .

  • Develops and maintains training materials for external users.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Assists senior staff members in conducting major field experiments and consults in developing procedures.

    Additional Responsibilities

    The Research Specialist will help to evaluate management approaches for feral pigs . Main duties will involve field studies, data analysis, writing reports, and communication of results in oral and written format. Specific duties may include use of drones to monitor crop damage, use of remote cameras to estimate population size and effects of management actions on pig populations . Research Specialist will work closely with personnel from the USDA APHIS Wildlife Services National Wildlife Research Center, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Wildlife Services and private landowners . Must maintain current knowledge of the relevant scientific literature on wildlife damage management, population biology, ecology of feral pigs . Comply with all local, state, and federal laws . Assist in preparation of manuscripts and communication of research results to scientific and lay audiences .

    Minimum Requirements

    Education – Bachelor’s Degree .

    Experience – Four years of related experience.

    Ability to – Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

    Physical Requirements – Ability to lift moderately heavy objects. Ability to exert heavy force.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. from a regionally accredited institution or university in ecology, wildlife science, biology or closely related field.

  • Research experience, background and interest in ecology of large mammals, animal behavior, animal damage, or wildlife disease ecology.

  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills .

  • Experience flying drones, analysis of drone imagery, GIS skills, or use of remote cameras .

    Supervision of Others

    This position generally does not supervise employees.

    Other Requirements

  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.

  • Overnight travel

  • Strong work ethic

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as a productive member of a research team

  • Must be able to work under adverse field conditions (unpredictable weather, long hours)

  • May handle wild-caught animals

  • Good interpersonal skills required to work closely with diverse group of volunteers, cooperators, and private landowners
