What will it be like to work on the Model e team?

The Prototype Fabrication Technician will support the Prototype Operations Manager and Advanced Vehicle Development teams in two primary capacities:

  1. Working at the direction of the Prototype Operations Manager to complete and bring online the space, systems, and equipment of a 16,000 square foot general purpose prototype fabrication shop.

  2. Assist Advanced Vehicle Development teams with the development and testing of next generation electric vehicles by utilizing the space, tools, and equipment to fabricate prototype parts and test articles. When required the Prototype Technician will also manage outsourcing of protype production, whether internally within Ford or externally to approved vendors.

What you’ll be asked to do:

  • Help define, purchase, and install equipment and tools needed for R&D teams to do their jobs.

  • Work with vendors to support prototyping and testing efforts.

  • Help evaluate operations for inefficiencies and implement improvements to increase efficiency and productivity.

  • Assemble and debug test equipment hardware and control systems, and design and build test fixtures and assembly tools.

  • Help define requirements for lab spaces and equipment install and work directly with engineering and facility ops teams for install and commissioning of lab equipment.

  • Coordinate logistics operations between sites to ensure components and vehicles make it to desired locations, on time and in condition to continue development activities.

  • Adhere to safety procedures and training to ensure a healthy and safe work environment.

  • Use shop equipment to construct prototype parts. This includes manual lathes, mills, CNC mills and routers, sheet metal break and shears, iron worker, TIG/MIG welders, thermo-former, 3D printers, bandsaws, general woodworking equipment, spray finishing equipment, soldering and electronics assembly tools, vehicle lifts and garage equipment, and myriad hand tools.

Minimum Requirements:

  • An eagerness to work cross-functionally in a dynamic environment where you are part of a high-performing team

  • Solid work ethic and innate sense of urgency

  • 2-year degree in Automotive Tech & Repair or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of fabrication and hardware prototyping experience.

  • Strong background in mechanical prototyping, machining, and fabrication.

  • Experience with shop/lab equipment installation and maintenance.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and collaboration skills.

  • Basic literacy with CAD programs

Preferred Requirements:

  • Hands-on experience building and launching automotive products and vehicle

  • prototyping.

  • Experience supporting electric vehicle architecture & integration

  • development.

  • Experience in professional model making

  • Competency using Autodesk Fusion 360 and Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE

  • Competency using Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW

  • Experience in machine repair and calibration

  • Experience with CAM software and programming (Master Cam, Fusion 360, etc.)

  • Experience in auto restoration

  • Experience in automotive finish application and autobody work

  • Experience in homebuilt aircraft construction (metal, wood, composite)

  • Experience in mechanical design

  • Experience in DC electronics design/fabrication and mechatronics

  • A system approach to design and development with the desire and curiosity to strive for exceptional delivery execution and continuous improvement.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience
