Job Description

NREL is seeking a versatile, year-long, undergraduate- or graduate-level Intern to support project management activities (non-technical) for several of NREL’s international programs (https://www.nrel.gov/international/) including: the Clean Energy Ministerial, Net Zero World, Puerto Rico 100, and the Global Climate Action Partnership.

The Clean Energy Ministerial (https://www.cleanenergyministerial.org/) : NREL supports the Clean Energy Ministerial, a high-level global forum to promote policies and programs that advance clean energy technology, to share lessons learned and best practices, and to encourage the transition to a global clean energy economy. NREL coordinates seven Clean Energy Ministerial Worksteams focusing on a wide range of topics from policy to hydrogen to system-wide planning.

Net Zero World (https://www.nrel.gov/international/net-zero-world.html) : NREL is part of a unique team that includes nine U.S. government agencies and 10 DOE national laboratories, in partnership with other governments, philanthropies, and international institutions to support partner countries in meeting their clean energy targets and achieving just transitions to net-zero emission energy systems. Assistance is provided through tailored energy modeling and analysis to inform country-driven net-zero pathways and technical and investment plans.

Puerto Rico Grid Recover and Modernization Efforts: NREL is supporting follow-on tasks and technical assistance to stakeholders in Puerto Rico following the Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transitions to 100% Renewable Energy Study (PR100) (https://pr100.gov/) . This study comprehensively analyzes possible pathways for Puerto Rico to achieve its renewable energy goals while incorporating stakeholder perspectives and advancing energy resilience for all Puerto Ricans.

The Global Climate Action Partnership (https://globalclimateactionpartnership.org/) : The Global Climate Action Partnership (formerly the Low Emission Development Strategies Global Partnership) is a worldwide network that accelerates ambitious climate goals and advances implementation in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean. This member-driven network harnesses the collective knowledge of 120 countries and more than 450 institutions to drive collaboration and peer learning focused on country-driven implementation actions to achieve resilient, just, and inclusive low-emission and net-zero economies.

This internship is available immediately in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Accelerated Deployment and Decision Support Center in our Golden, Colorado Office, or could be remote. The position would be part- to full-time (20 – 40 hours per week) during the academic year with the potential for full-time coverage during school breaks (e.g. winter holidays and summer). Potential candidates would also be eligible to work at NREL as an intern for up to one year after graduation.

The Intern will be responsible for:

1) Stakeholder Engagement with International Partners: Assisting in the preparation of reports, proposals, and presentations for international entities, with the goal of collaborating with other international organizations to deliver clean energy assistance.

2) Stakeholder Engagement with Country Partners : Assisting in the engagement with country partners, including the preparation of project guidelines, needs analyses, and more, with the goal of delivering high-quality technical assistance.

3) Data Collection, Analysis, and Reporting: Gather and organize feedback, info, and data acquired from prospective and/or current users. Includes supporting reporting of results to Department of State and NREL project team members with the goal of determining the impacts of ongoing programming. 4) 4) Project Support and Knowledge Management: Contributing to various project phases, including planning, execution, and evaluation. Assisting with management and categorization of knowledge resources developed under the projects to encourage wide dissemination and use.

5) Qualitative Research and Policy Analysis: Conducting research on clean energy markets, policies, energy justice, and renewable energy technologies as they pertain to clean energy and climate issues in different country contexts.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

Must be enrolled in, or graduated from, a graduate-level program in international relations, business administration, public policy, political science, law, environmental studies/justice, renewable energy markets/technology/policy, engineering, or other relevant field. Previous work experience in these fields is also acceptable.

In addition, the successful candidate must have:

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Experience/interest in international climate cooperation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple deadlines.

  • Professional demeanor for engaging with clients and project stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

Spanish language skills strongly preferred. In addition, the successful candidate may have:

  • Familiarity with international climate policies (NDCs, LTS, etc.) and organizations (IEA, IRENA, IAEA).

  • Familiarity with written project and proposal development, membership management, and/or knowledge management.

  • Prior education, coursework, or experience in energy policy; community engagement on energy and environmental issues; climate/carbon policy; greenhouse gas accounting and/or decarbonization is preferred.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
