Job Description

The Department of Engineering and Physics, College of Business, Engineering and Technology at Texas A&M University-Texarkana seeks to fill a part-time machinist to operate/maintain manufacturing machines in their MEEN 361: Manufacturing & Materials Selection in Design lab class.

The machinist operates, maintains, and sets-up manual lathe, mill, and CNC milling machines to demonstrate to students in MEEN 361: Manufacturing & Materials Selection in Design lab class.

Expected Pay: $26.00 - $28.30 per hourWork Hours: 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. (Tuesday/every week) (Spring Semester 2025: Jan 06- May 10, 2025). However, a later start time may be permitted.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to demonstrate some basic machining operations such as turning, facing, drilling, taper turning, milling, etc.

  • Perform set-ups of the machine tools.

  • Troubleshoot process issues with minimal supervision.

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks, and support requirements provided by the manufacturer.

  • Actively support a clean and safe work environment

Safety Accountabilities:

  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of complex ergonomic issues in the workplace and can perform detailed analysis to resolve

  • Able to evaluate complex workplace injuries and provide resolution to them.

  • Monitors reported injuries and recommends improvements to reduce injuries.

  • Has a thorough understanding of regulatory compliance to be aware of accident prevention.

  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of SDSs and how to locate them.

  • Capable of identifying PPE as related to one's job, and what application it is used for.

  • Picks up trash and debris and disposes of it properly or places it where it will not pose a hazard to others.

  • Keeps work area clean throughout the day.

  • Disposes of combustibles and flammables properly.

  • Follows all planned housekeeping schedules communicated by the Lead.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Four years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to perform mathematical computations.

  • Ability to read engineering drawings and sketches.

  • Ability to operate and maintain the following equipment:

  • Multi-axis CNC mill (Tormach 770MX CNC Mill)

  • Manual lathe (Enco 3 phase 7-1/2 hp 16 Swing Geared Head Engine Lathe)

  • Manual mill (Enco 9×42 in 3 hp Step pully control knee Milling Machine)

  • Machine shop equipment e.g., drill press, band saw, etc.

  • Ability to move, transport and/or lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive tasks on a regular basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Using the following software: Solidworks, AutoCAD

  • At least three (3) years of hands-on experience in a CNC machining environment, manual machining experience desired.

  • Understands the basics of CNC machining methodology.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to interpret basic engineering drawings and Process Sheets to produce parts.

  • Understanding of appropriate lab and safety protocols and procedures.

  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal), including the ability to effectively communicate in common manufacturing terms and express ideas and concerns.
