GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Agriculture is searching for a Laboratory Supervisor for its Analytical Laboratory in Laramie, Wyoming. This laboratory supervisor will supervise the microbiology and water programs. This supervisor will be responsible for meat/food, dairy, and water sample testing. This position will perform analyses, perform and oversee proficiency testing and review data; train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate staff, coordinate procurement of section supplies, chemicals, reagents, and equipment; oversee equipment maintenance and calibrations, research methodologies and maintain analytical standards to meet laboratory certifications; and is responsible for quality improvement to maintain federal certifications (EPA / USDA / FDA) and ISO / IEC 17025:2017 accreditation standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
Develops analytical procedures and performs high-complexity testing.
Responsible for supervision of section personnel including counseling, assisting staff in new assay development, devising schedules of work, establishing priorities, conducting performance appraisals, and tracking daily output, sick time, and vacation requests.
Reviews laboratory results, analyses, and quality control tests to ensure consistency and accuracy of testing procedures and results.
Writes detailed technical, investigative, and scientific reports.
Responsible for supply orders and overall equipment maintenance schedules.
Investigates new methodology and equipment to recommend for purchase.
Responsible for creating, maintaining, and implementing training plans and training of subordinates for the microbiology and water sections.
Works closely with the FDA, USDA, and EPA for analyses performed on multiple sample types.
Creates completes, and maintains all records necessary for ISO / IEC 17025:2017 laboratory accreditation.
Coordinates microbiology program with other divisions of the Wyoming Department of Agriculture.
Serves as an expert witness.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Experience working in an ISO / IEC 17025:2017 laboratory.
Experience working in a laboratory certified by the EPA to analyze water samples.
Knowledge of USDA MLG and FDA BAM methods for microbiology.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of microbiology and water testing fundamentals relating to the analysis of a wide variety of meat, food, and water samples; standards, guidelines, and regulations governing the evaluation and/or interpretation of data or results; laboratory quality control practices; laboratory safety and hazardous substances.
Knowledge of ISO / IEC 17025:2017 laboratory accreditation, and quality improvement.
Knowledge and ability to work and troubleshoot complex/sophisticated analytical laboratory equipment.
Knowledge of principles, concepts, and current practices of government management planning, including budget development and control.
Knowledge of personnel management and administrative responsibilities.
Knowledge of maintaining documentation in support of the traceability of reference materials.
Knowledge of chain of custody, legal jurisprudence, and pertinent state and federal statutes and regulations.
Knowledge of hazard communication and chemical hygiene.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science)
Experience:
1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior Laboratory Scientist
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-7 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior Laboratory Scientist
