Purpose

The Laboratory Coordinator, under general supervision, supports the daily activities of the material preparation laboratory. Responsible for completing jobs submitted to be performed using wire electrical discharge machining equipment, lathe, mill, and other processing equipment available in the laboratory. Maintains lab supplies and equipment. Responsible for fabrication, maintenance and upgrading of related experimental fixtures. Training undergraduate and graduate students to operate various machining and processing equipment where a significant safety hazard exists. Performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports the daily activities in the material preparation laboratory.

  • Operates available machining, fabrication, and processing equipment in the laboratory including wire electrical discharge machining, lathe, mill, and other available instruments.

  • Trains undergraduate and graduate students to operate various processing equipment where a significant safety hazard exists.

  • Assists in managing longer-term lab organizational efforts.

  • Maintains lab supplies and other research equipment.

  • Ensures adherence to lab standards and practices to maximize safety and operational effectiveness.

  • Manufactures parts from metals, ceramics and polymeric materials from drawings, prints, or verbal instruction to a required tolerance.

  • Assists faculty and students in conducting tasks and experiments and research projects.

  • Provides support to faculty and their laboratories and performs necessary maintenance on lab equipment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for Laboratory Coordinator I

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 1 year of related experience

Minimum qualifications for Laboratory Coordinator II

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 2 years of related experience

Minimum qualifications for Laboratory Coordinator III

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 3 years of related experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good analytical thinking and math skills.

  • Basic mechanical skills.

  • Strong attention to detail, safety, and accuracy.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Solid Works knowledge. Programming knowledge helpful.
