Job Description

The Data Analysis and Visualization in the NREL Computational Science Center has an opening for a graduate student researcher in Transportation Systems with special emphasis on data-driven decision modeling. We are looking for a dynamic, motivated researcher with a strong technical background and an interest in the mission of NREL. The successful candidate will collaborate with NREL staff and researchers to optimize electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, enhance urban mobility systems, and support evidence-based decision-making in sustainable transportation.

Responsibilities include:

• Process large-scale transportation datasets to extract actionable insights

• Perform data cleaning and transformation to prepare inputs for machine learning algorithms and simulation platforms.

• Develop behavioral choice models (e.g., discrete choice models ) to understand decision-making related to travel and EV charging

• Model and optimize EV charging infrastructure sizing, balancing user demand ad evaluating grid impact

• Author, present and assist in the preparation of technical papers, reports and conference proceedings

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

• A strong background in algorithm development and implementation for scientific and engineering applications.

• Strong analytical skills and programming experience, especially in Python.

• Experience running python code on HPC systems.

• Experience developing discrete choice model.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Only students enrolled in or recently graduated from a masters program will be considered for this position.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $43,700 - $69,900
