Applicants new to Federal Service will receive a starting salary at a higher step: GS-03 Step 9 $44,694 GS-04 Step 7 $47,529 GS-05 Step 5 $50,223 Responsibilities You will perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities. You will perform airfield firefighting by involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are. You will operate a variety of firefighting equipment. You will combat fire or rescue personnel on board ships where conditions create very difficult and dangerous situations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications For GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; 2) Assisting with rescue operations; 3) Detecting, reducting, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Operating fire communications equipment; 5) Controlling hazardous material incidents; and 6) Assisting in fire protection and prevention. Certifications Required: This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I/II, Airport Firefighter for Naval Station Whidbey Island only, HAZMAT Operations, CPR. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC, ProBoard or through a state that offers reciprocity to IFSAC or ProBoard. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application. For GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Assisting with rescue operations; 2) Using fire prevention equipment in eliminating potential fire hazards; 3) Performing initial and on-going patient assessment and physical exam; and 4) Ventilating smoke from burning structures effectively. Certifications Required: This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I and HAZMAT Awareness. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard or through a state that offers reciprocity to IFSAC or ProBoard. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application. For GS-03: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general work experience of military service that demonstrates your ability to follow directions and to read, understand, and retain a variety of instructions, regulations, and procedures and that otherwise demonstrates your ability to perform or learn to perform the duties of the position. Education In lieu of general/specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience: GS-05: Successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study leading to a bachelor degree. or have a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Your percentage of the required education plus your percentage of the required experience equals one hundred percent. GS-4: Completed a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study. or a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. GS-3: Completed firefighter training that was obtained as part of a high school curriculum. or completed one year of related education or firefighter training. or a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Additional Information This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. Applicants new to Federal Service will receive as starting salary at a higher step through Special Needs Pay. The salary below reflects pay for a 40 hour work week. This position is 72 hours per week and salary will increase accordingly. Applicants new to Federal Service will receive a starting salary at a higher step through Special Needs Pay setting as follows: GS-0081-03 Step 9 $44,694 GS-0081-04 Step 7 $47,529 GS-0081-05 Step 5 $50,223 Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires. You will be required to work a rotating work schedule which includes nights, weekends, holidays, and is subject to mandatory overtime and recall. Physical Demands: The duties of this position are physically demanding and require a physically able employee. Ability to lift and move heavy objects. Must be able to wear protective clothing, such as firefighter ensembles weighing 50-60 pounds. Climbs ladders and works at various heights. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. To meet those demands, physical fitness training is required on more than a weekly basis as reflected in department guidance and instruction. Required physical training will be completed during duty hours and on each available shift. Work Environment: Employee is exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZMAT spills, or possible explosions. May suffer from burns, dehydration, and other effects of heat; smoke inhalation, heavy protective clothing, falling materials, or explosions. Subject to physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities, exposure to HAZMAT and high noise levels. Must deal with victims in emergency situations that may be in varying stages of fright, panic, injury, and shock. May be exposed to infectious disease. There may be hazards while operating or riding fire trucks at high speeds under adverse conditions. The employee works outside in all types of weather conditions.
