Why this job matters

You will be a BT-wide technical & compliance authority for Electrical infrastructure in BT. This covers all of BT’s technical facilities (c. 6000 exchanges, c.30 data-centres, 22 Core Mobile Switch sites) across the UK, with c. 250K mechanical and electrical assets under management.

These facilities and associated infrastructure drives all BT network-based services, as well as internal and external IT solutions, and underpins BT’s strategy in terms of accelerated fibre rollout, ESN/5G deployment and much more.

You will excel as a technical specialist, setting the policies for our electrical infrastructure, helping set the strategy, driving innovation and expanding our use of renewable energy.

What you’ll be doing

Provide specialist M&E knowledge in the preparation, management and maintenance of M&E systems related policies, engineering standards and guides.

Perform the role of technical design lead on specific projects

Prepare Statements of Requirements (SoR) for project specific systems

Provide technical governance and evaluation of project specific tender returns

Represent BT, as the nominated technical specialist, during Factory and Site Acceptance Testing (FAT/SAT)

Perform supplier management during specific projects.

Keep up to date with emerging technologies and trends within the telecommunications industry. Compare current policies, standards and guides with other industries (e.g. water sector, energy sector, etc.).

Perform supplier technical audits of their standards, facilities, training and product quality for compliance with BT policies, standards and guides.

Perform the role of technical coordinator and interface between stakeholders (BT), suppliers and interested parties

Deliver activities and programmes realting to compliance and assureance of BT’s mechanical and/or electrical infrastructure

Implement and own electrical systems e2e including specification, tender, training and in-life excellence

Skills and Experience

• Stakeholder Management: Able to establish and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships and facilitates mutually beneficial negotiations to develop solutions, ensuring they meet current and emerging business and technical needs. Ability to work at all levels – ranging from MD to front-line across multiple CFUs.

• Technical Expert: Serving as an externally recognised M&E expert - influencing industry forums, external boards and/or conferences through technical expertise. Proactively contributes to the product evolution by bringing an understanding of what new product/services can be enabled by emerging technology capabilities.

• Risk Management: The ability to identify risks, balance the threats and opportunities associated with the risks, take appropriate mitigating action against the risks and track and manage risk over their lifetime

• Business acumen: Knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organisational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy (e.g. business KPIs, business cases)

• Financial Acumen: The ability to apply financial knowledge to the financial management of own work area, project, programme, business unit, business case or contract. Has good understanding of financial principles and is able to apply them to their immediate work area/project.

• People leader – leading, coaching and supporting other specialists in their work

• Ability to work in pressured environments e.g. in relation to bids or in terms of driving the necessary estate transformation

• Critical thinking – ability to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of a project or problem and offering alternative solutions, approaches and conclusions

• Problem-solving – ability to troubleshoot issues or approach a new project or challenge in a structured way

• Communications – ability to; understand the needs and requirements of our internal clients, working within project teams to develop new solutions or improve existing systems, or work with other departments and stakeholders

• Organisational – ability to organise and manage your time in a time-sensitive or project-based environment

• Creative thinking – ability to explore and implement new ideas and ways of thinking; thinking outside the box

Numerical and report/specification writing – strong numerical analyse and computational skills, together with concise and accurate report writing capability

Experience you’d be expected to have

• Specialist in power and/or mechanical systems

• You will be a qualified to BS7671 18th Edition

• You will have a solid academic M&E engineering background (BEng, HND, HNC), or the equivalent demonstrable work experience

• You will have demonstrable practical experience of: on-site power generation, UPS Systems, AC Switch-gear, HV Power, Fuel tanks, modular cooling, centralised cooling, airflow, BMS, iron work

• You will have in depth working knowledge of The Electricity at Work Act, The Health and Safety at Work At & Construction Design Management Regulations

• Experience in renewable energy

• A proven delivery track record of M&E infrastructure project delivery

• Comfortable in developing your expertise into emerging technology areas

• Ability to deal with multiple competing suppliers

• Full UK Driving licence and willingness to travel extensively in the UK and occasionly globally.
